MOT fail

Well I guess it had to happen poor old thing failed today for the following:
AA sticker in top left of windscreen
both suspension arms need fron and rear bushes
nail in tyre
power steering pump damp but not leaking
Emissions  
corrosion on mounting point for tow bar, needs welding OR remove towbar and it is ok!!!
As I now have no place to carry out repairs except simple ones it looks like the end, garage quote of £800 to do all jobs, suspension arms £173 each.
Engine is good and so is g/box £200 quoted for scrap, value of car £650.

I'm sorry to say this Chief, but if it's scrap-value is £200, then that is what it's worth!   Very hard I realise, but with the fail-sheet as it is I wouldn't give you any more.    Only my opinion you understand.

What's this AA sticker lark then Bob ? good thing it wasn't the tax disc which is in the wiper arc,the AA sticker is outside the arc at least,what can he be worried about,if the screen was muddy the sticker would be difficult to see  Roll Eyes,we are going round in ever decreasing circles and you know from the old proverb where we will eventually end up  Shocked

I believe that the only thing that is allowed on the windscreen is the tax disc and that has to be at the bottom nearside corner and the right way up. I also believe that it is also illegal to have things hanging down in the windscreen area as they could distract you.
If you think about it there are so many things in the car now that can distract you 1 or 2 more things won't make much difference.

I read the official test standards and it says if something is deemed to be in the arc, the tester must tell the owner and ask them to remove it BEFORE failing, failing i can take it was the nit picking bits, but it did answer one question that always crops up here and that is the airbag light is not part of the test at all.
 
What to buy now mmmmmm

PJ fullly agree with you repairs will come to far more than i can afford so sadly she has to go, 6 good years with hardly any problems so cant complain

800.00 divided into 6 years=133.33 per year. Pretty cheap motoring by anyones standard!! But
1) Remove sticker- Cost nothing
2) Puncture repair 10.00?
3) Remove tow bar retest then put back- Cost nothing
4) Suspension bushes- not new arms needed
5) Power steering pump- leave alone,was not part of the failure?
6) That leaves emissions to do
Doesn't sound like 800.00 quid to me but it's your car  Lee

lee thought front bushes only came with the arms, rear are seperate i know, not much point putting a tow bar onto a weak area, still would need welding ,not that i would refit. Puncture is new tyre, outside reparable area.  If you know the front bushes can be bought as a seperate item please let me know.  Emissions fail was on CO levels.

Front and rear bushes can be changed. Not that difficult to do. It's the balljoint that can't be replaced. Lee

If tyre can't be fixed how about a good used for about 30 quid or something? Think both my last ones were "good used", still work!
 
BTW the stickers on window is a new one on me! Anyone remember when folks used to have their windows full of stickers? Usually of the "where they've been" variety. I'm going back a while of course Grin
 
I agree with Lee TBH all seems straightforward possiblee apart from the emissions bit, could be more tricky ~ on the other hand might be something really simple

Zone 'A is:
. in the swept area of the Windscreen
. 290mm wide
. centred on the centre of the steering
wheel.
 
1. In Zone 'A:
 
b. a Windscreen sticker or other
obstruction encroaching more than 10mm
 
e. a Windscreen sticker or other
obstruction encroaching more than 40mm
 
Only applies to the swept area. your MOT tester is wrong! Wink
