Am I right in thinking that the traction control is always on unless you press the switch to illuminate the dash light? The manual seems a bit confusing! (well, to me anyway)

yes you are right there,if you click the swith so the green light illuminates in the dash,the tc if off,no light in dash tc is on (default)

The TC light on the dach is yellow / orange...
Light OFF = TC on..
Light ON = Time for some fun..!..!
