Hi guys I am thinking of putting sat nav in my car but cant decide which one:-

(1) PDA with Tom Tom 3 With saftey camera stuff built in at a cost of arround £500

(2) One of theise units that is the size of a standard radio but seem complicated to install and use.?? for arround the same money?

Any Ideas lads as I dont have a clue on this score ??

alan,

I have the Ford Travelpilot in my car which is fitted to the late model Mondeo & Focus.

I fitted it a while ago and couldn't get the cd changer working with it that was already in the car. I managed to get hold of a cd changer from a late Mondeo and everything is working fine now. I made up a lead and bingo!!!

All I need to sort out now is the stalk controls. Uwe on the mailing list has also fitted one (he is in Germany) and has managed to upgrade the RIM to work with the Travelpilot.

All together it has cost me about £500.00 but the unit is new and the changer is only a few months old, and it fits perfectly!

Barry. can you tell me what is involved in fitting? I presume that you need some sort of arial, but what wiring? john.n ???

John,

Basically all you need to get the actual unit going is the correct Travelpilot ariel (I searched Ebay Germany and found a new one for £35.00)

The bracket on the back of the sat nav unit just needs to be turned round to fit the Scorpio mounting rail

The power and speaker connectors are the wrong type but I just bought one of those ISO to Ford adapter cables from Halfords.

Plugs in straight away and worked first time. I have a copy of the latest UK disk if you do go down that route which will save you a fair few quid as well.

If you run a Pocket PC of some kind (I run the Dell Axim), you can easily use the Tom Tom system. We have use dit in the US (US version), plus a friend of mine over here runs it on his IPaq and we have had very good results, especially if you download the 'points of interest' which gives you all the locations of the speed cameras (very useful in London).
Got another friend who has a £1200 Alpine head unit for sale which is like new, he wants to go with a system that he can utilize between multiple vehicles (which would be something I would definitely want to do). I believe the Alpine system is for sale at £500!

Idealy I am after a unit I can take out of my car and put it in my van at work as well?

It looks like that a PDA running Tom Tom softwhere is my best bet.

Any Ideas where I can get a new one cheep?.
So far I have found one from handtec it costs £505.00 and that is with everything including a docking station, So if anyone knows of a similar thing please let me know.

Just a little update. Spoke to my friend who has the in-dash SAT-NAV system for sale and it is in fact a Clarion and not an Alpine. He is getting me the model number for your information if required, but he did say it was about £1000 new and he wants about £400 for it.
I understand it to be in excellent condition.

The first unit shown on this page is being offered as an option by Ford... on a Transit! Maybe other motors too I guess. This is if you don't want the 6000 radio/CD player, so I imagine it will plug in without too much difficulty. Mind you, I don't think the Tranny has the steering column controls. :-/

Paul, excuse my ignorance but isnt this a 1 din fitting? If so it would need an adapter to fit in the 2 din space,also i would hazard a guess that the electical cons. are different> john.n

I think you will find that the space in the Scorpio dash for the head unit is not 2 DIn but either 1.5 or 1.8 DIN. Halfords sell an adaptor that I used in my own Scorpio after fitting a single DIN head unit and that works very well.
Most head units these days have a wiring loom assembly to ISO standards. This means that most head units have the same type of plastic connectors. However, not all car manufacturers use ISO type connections in their wiring looms so you will most likely have to get a harness adaptor for the car which converts it to ISO. Then it will be an easy push-fit connection! ;)

Erm... I'm not 100% sure what the size is called, but yes, its smaller than 'our' big units.
I'm also not 100% sure of the fitment, I was taking a half educated guess. As I said, its available as a swap for the 6000 head unit, which some of us have. I assumed it might be an easyish swap. :-[
Looking again, I guess the Travelpilot might be a better bet.

John,

the units in The Scorpio, Mondeo, Fiesta, Focus and Escort were actually 1.8 DIN

The Galaxy uses the 2 DIN units (the same as the Seat and Some Skoda models)

Older radios are 1 DIN.

I have the 1.8 DIN Travelpilot sat nav in mine which is the one fitted to the 2001+ Focus and Mondeo.

The wiring on the back is indeed ISO but a pair of converters from Halfords soon sorted it out
