Title: climate control
Post by lucifersam on Apr 4th, 2004, 12:30pm
just wondered how long it should take for the climate control to start working. in my car it seems to take at least 5 minutes before it starts blowing, hot or cold. works fine after that but seems like a long wait to me, is it normal?

From what i've read on the site, when you first start the car up and the air con is turned on it is designed to direct the air to the window vents only regardless of the flow you have selected with the dial which stops you getting a blast of freezing cold air in the face which happens with other vehicles, once the car has warmed up enough the air flow will then be directed in the direction you have selected, so about five minutes sounds about right.

Hope this helps

Hi Sam,

you have two different systems running here. The heat is simply provided by the engine coolent flowing through the heater matrix so the time will be determined by the time it takes the coolant to get warm and hence give off heat through the matrix. Slow or poor heating can be caused by a blocked Matrix.

The cooling effect is provided by a gas, R134a, and this takes a short time to cycle around the system and start "removing " heat from the cabin.

For full details see my ac pages at http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/acindex.htm

Kind Regards

so just out of curiosity, and diverging slightly, if i have the temp set at say, 22 and the blower on auto and the weather is as it is now, what difference does it make if i have the ac button on or off? i have noticed that sometimes it comes on when i start the car and sometimes it doesnt.

If you have cc fitted then the default on start up is on. The ac will take moisture out of the air whilst maintaining a steady internal temperature. CC is not just to keep the cabin cool.

Read http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/aircon.htm for a full explanation.

OK, thats understandable, but if its on by default why is it only sometimes it comes on when you start the car. (go on, make my day, tell me ive got a fault!!)   ;D

It depends how long the car's been switched off I think you'll find. Something like an hour.
So if you've had it running with the A/C off, then switch on again before the hour (or whatever it is), it will return to the setting you had. Any longer than that, it goes back to the default.
Or thats the idea anyway.

Well here I go reopening an old thread (very bored in work tonight!). My A/C will be on when I switch the engine on if it was on when I turned it off. If it was off when I last had the engine running then it will also be off when I next start the engine up. It doesn't seem to remember the setting, no matter how long or short the car has been sitting round for. Maybe it's a fault or maybe my car is just mad  ::)
