Title: Off Topic - Pop-Up Advice Post by Paul B on Apr 18th, 2004, 4:00pm OK, this is completely off topic, for which I apologise, but pop-ups are just beginning to do my head in. I get SO many, its ridiculous. Kinda makes it difficult to read things on here at times! So, I need advice from someone... anyone. How do I get rid of them? I'm using AOL v9 by the way. Thanx in advance... Paul |

Title: Re: Off Topic - Pop-Up Advice Post by JohnJ on Apr 18th, 2004, 5:01pm Paul Goto download.com Download Zonealarm or the google toolbar to stop pop-ups. Then download ad-aware 6 from download.com and run the sofware. click on get new updates before running it and this will kill the robots that are at work on you hard drive. (Robots are small programs running in the background giving away personal info and causing pop ups). HTH JJ ;D |

Title: Re: Off Topic - Pop-Up Advice Post by Kevin_Tulloch on Apr 18th, 2004, 8:59pm Hi Paul If you throw your computer out the window, that tends to stop "pop-ups"!!!Seriously i agree with John J,i've got ad-aware 6 (it's free by the way),and it's amazing how much "spyware",you have on your computer.Download it,install it and run it 3 or 4 times, when you first use it.I use it about once a week and there's always something new on the PC!!Also check for updates as well every time you use it,again they're free.It should help with your "problems.......now,that other "virus" you were talking about.................................! See you at Derby. Regards Kev |

Title: Re: Off Topic - Pop-Up Advice Post by Paul B on Apr 19th, 2004, 6:14am Right, well... I've just downloaded the ad-aware 6 software, done a scan and deleted some stuff, but the pop-ups are still coming! Haven't really got time to fiddle with it right now, but might try again tonight. Any tips? Or, have I done something wrong somewhere? Paul Just had another quick check (really must go to work though) and the Adwatch bit is not installed. Says I need Adaware plus now, which I think I have to buy. Whats gone wrong?? :'( |

Title: Re: Off Topic - Pop-Up Advice Post by DJWerkz on Apr 20th, 2004, 1:01pm Are the pop-ups headed as 'Messenger Service...'? I have procedures for stopping these if you are using either Window XP or 2000. Let me know. |

Title: Re: Off Topic - Pop-Up Advice Post by easyrider66 on Apr 20th, 2004, 1:59pm Have a look here http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/downloads.html , for spywareblaster, and spywareguard both help to stop the crap getting onto your computer. http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download spybot finds things adaware misses and vice versa. http://grc.com/stm/ShootTheMessenger.htm This stops messenger spam in windows. http://www.mozilla.org/ These browsers are more secure then IE, and have built in pop up blockers. Title: Re: Off Topic - Pop-Up Advice Post by Eddie on Apr 21st, 2004, 11:54am If you download and install the Google toolbar,it adds itself to Internet explorer. It has an excellent pop up stopper that remebers what sites you want it to work on.PLUS you get a great search engine. I would also second the comments of others regarding ad-aware,used weekly it keeps the trash out of the 'puter. SPY WARE BLASTER is also useful. eddie |

Title: Re: Off Topic - Pop-Up Advice Post by David_South_West on Apr 22nd, 2004, 2:04pm Don't forget some web sites use pop ups so if you can't see what you think you should disable pop up blocker. Often you get "error on page" showing bottom left of Explorer's screen. |

Title: Re: Off Topic - Pop-Up Advice Post by Paul B on Apr 22nd, 2004, 9:44pm Well, I gave up on the Ad-aware software as it seemed to absolutely nothing for me ???. However, I did follow the instructions for XP that DJW suggested, and it works a treat :) Cheers DJ. My online experience is a much more pleasant one today. This site hasn't been so good for ages. A happy Paul |

Title: Re: Off Topic - Pop-Up Advice Post by DJWerkz on Apr 22nd, 2004, 10:45pm Anytime Paul, thats what we are all here for to help each other. While I respect the advice provided by many other users the pop-up blockers will not stock the type of pop-ups you were getting, the only way to rid yourself of these is following those simple steps. I use Zone Alarm Pro but still had to follow those instructions for Windows 2000. Take care everyone. |
