Title: Replacing 24V Spark Plugs
Post by VladSoare on Apr 23rd, 2004, 9:29am
Hi, guys.

I had my spark plugs changed when I bought the car, not too long ago, but next time I want to replace them myself, and I don't know what tools I'll need.

Firstly, what size are the 24V spark plugs? I mean the socket size.

Secondly, is there a special tool for removing the spark plugs from the engine, given the fact that they are buried deep into the engine and can't be reached by hand?

Thank you.

Dead easy, 5/8 or 16mm plug socket, I usually use a 3/8
socket set with a u/j diectly in the socket and a 6in extention between that and a power bar.

When replacing your plugs remember the heads are ali, so its easy to cross thread them. There is a cheap tool for inserting them and hand tightening before fully tightening to avoid this happening. It is a length of rubber basically with a handle that allows you to hold the plug by the tip and slowly begin inserting. Alternativly, a piece of hose will do the job . regards, john.n ;)

I have the same intention as VladSoare!

but:

Is it necessary to fit the spark plugs with a kind of screw locking?

What do you mean -screw locking? Put the plugs in as discribed with a flex type tool to prevent cross threading- you will feel it get hard if it begins to cross thead. Finally tighten with a proper plug spanner. Hand tight is enough. john.n

15ft lb is the correct torque for the spark plugs on the 24v.......Ford do recomend the use of Never Seez thread compound but I myself use a small amount of copperlease on the threads....on my 12v ...
