Title: Fuel Costs
Post by Metropol247 on Apr 27th, 2004, 7:28am
Hi

I'm looking to buy my first Scorpio and my friend advised me not to go near anything other than a diesel.

I thought there must be a lot of people on here with petrols so was just wondering are they expensive to keep filled? I realise that obviously when its a big car its going to require more fuel but how much do you spend on fuel?

My friend has never had any experience with Scorpio's so I'd be interested to hear it from somehow who runs one.

Thanks

Hi there

You are right they do take a few £££ to keep topped up.I have a 2.9 12v and average about 22mpg on mixed roads.Takes about £45 to fill up and does 250 -300 miles per tank, as it is our second car that we use when we need the space it makes the running costs bearable.

There are many 2.0 and 2.3 owners who I'm sure will say they get better consumption so depends on your mileage per year really.

Just filled up - 2.0l 16v manual - cost me £36 for 46ltrs to do about 210 miles mainly in town/suburbs!

Car has just been tuned and maf cleaned

I work that out to about 21mpg!

You could also think about one with LPG!?

PS - I have a heavy right foot!

I can get 250 miles of pedal to the metal hard driving on £20 OF lpg in my 24v, if driven at normal speeds it will do up to 300 miles on a tank of gas (72 litres, 15 gals)
best of both worlds !!!!!!

I'm on the other side on the coin and only do long runs and the odd trip to the shops. my last trip returned 33mpg and the one before that returned 37.4mpg but as I said I'm not heavey on the throttle and let the speed build up slowly to cruising speed.

The car is 98 2.3 Ultima.

I know for a fact that if I drove around the town I would only get 25mpgs... ;D

Vehicle is 1995  24v 30,000 on the clock , local is giving 20 mpg.On "a  trip" using cruise control, set at an honest 75 mph , gives average 34 mpg.My 1991 granada scorpio 2.9 12v gives 18 mpg local and 33 mpg "on a trip".As mentioned in previous post  reasonably gentle acceleration helps but please don't stop showing mr2's and beamers what's what.(Don't you just love it when the pull up at the lights in the turn left/right lane ready to try and beat you at the amber and go straight on)

My P reg 24v returns around 24mpg normal driving running on petrol. However I converted to LPG which I get around 20mpg but only costs 35p per litre.

Costs per 1000 miles on petrol = £156
Costs per 1000 miles on LPG    = £ 88

Very similar to Nick here - except the baseball cap!!
Also get 19 around town, etc.  I can get 31.1 with the cruise set at 77 though.

Hey paul, do you think if  i slowed down to 77 instead of 79 i could achieve 31 instead of 28 ish LOL ;D ;D ;D

The 2.9 I think comes into it's own when towing. Last year I took a 24V Mk3 upto Scotland with a caravan on the back. Did 2222 miles, about 60% of the time towing, computer reckoned I averaged 24.5 but when I worked it out it was just over 25 mpg. On runs great, but round town get a Fiesta.  ;D

I was towing a trailer for the first time yesterday and going down hill I felt the engine doing more engine breaking then ever before.....I didnt need to break when usually I would have to on this hill.....Just wondered did the addition to the trailer lights trigger something in the ECU to do this.....maybe I gone mad ;D.

28mpg is easily possible with the 24v on a motorway cruise .. dropping to 26 with a slightly heavy foot and 24mpg if 'cruising' at license losing speed  ;). This compares well with smaller engine cars at elevated speed, a territory the Scorpio is best suited to with it's long legged overdrive top gear (auto at least).

Around town and short trip these cars drink fuel, they need about 2 litres to wake up from cold.

On my 96 car if you switch to metric (litres/km) then when stationary it will give you the litre/hour consumption. Parking on the west side of the M25 every morning I get a figure of between 1.3 and 1.5 litre/hour, which shows how keeping the engine running in stationary traffic costs over 1p a minute.

Thanks for all the advice so far.

I've found a 2.5 TD for sale, they say it does 35-40mpg which is tempting compared to 20mpg petrol.

So I'm thinking now if I do get one, it will have to be diesel.

Hi,

Just finished 405 miles (2.5TD) for 46.46 litres of Diesel which is 8.7171 miles per litre which is 39.62 mpg.  There were 240 motorway miles ant the rest around town.

Regards John.
