Evening all.
Just been reading a post about MAF cleaning, etc, and there's a mention of that small filtery bit in the back of the air filter box. Ok, I know its meant to be there, and I know mine was broken. But... I had my car serviced last week (for which I specified Ford filters). Now, apparently these extra bits only come with the Ford filter, but I've been out to check mine and it hasn't been renewed >:(
So, my question is this... where can I get this piece or something similar? What is it meant to be made of? I'm wondering if one of those vacuum cleaner fliter things are the same stuff. Any thoughts?

The filter you mention is made from foam and is where the cam cover breather enters.
I can't remember where i have seen this type of foam before but it is quite coarse otherwise it would block up easily.
You could try cooker hood filter material. Or some stainless steel pan scrub.
So long as it can breath.

Paul,
The purpose of this little peice of foam is as an oil trap to prevent tiny particles of oil messing up the air filter. This pipe applies a vacuum (from the inlet) to remove crankcase fumes from the engine, which by law cannot be vented to atmosphere, and these fumes are burnt in combustion. BTW, this breather pipe can cause an unmetered air leak if the oil filler cap is loose or the oil dipstick is not properly refitted.
Cut a peice from a cleaning sponge and use that instead.

Ah, ok. Thanks AJS. I was always led to believe that these were not available as a seperate item. Obviously they are.
I'm very familiar with the FordPartsUK route, so next time I'm ordering stuff, I'll get one.

Hmm... just been researching a few part details here & there. The small filter in question wasn't listed for my car but was listed for a Taunus 2.3/2.9 (also Sierra ??? & Granada). Its Finis code is 6158180 and is apparently £1.30 inc. VAT
