Title: open estate hatch with motor running
Post by halfinch on Sep 8th, 2004, 7:25pm
Hi guys,
Thought this might interest some of you, as you know I lost my liecence due to ill health and my friend uses my car now in payment for driving me about, he pulled up to my house today and got out and opened the rear hatch to give me some fresh caught cod with the engine still running!!! which I though you couldn't do, the only difference in my car is that the remote hatch button ( the one with the car picture on)does not work although the central locking locks all and the remote locks all and the key will not lock/unlock the boot , maybe those who know about these things can work out why it opens with the engine running as I belive someone was wanting it to do so to change cd/dvd discs.

Mine opens when the engine is running, but not from the remote control.
But my car is a saloon. I don't know about estates.

I think you will find this feature was on taxis. john.n :)

Mine must have slipped in as it was never a taxi, I have full list of previous owners and have spoken to them all when I was looking for the red key.

My 2.9 12v Ultima Estate was also never a taxi. The tailgate can be opened with the engine running. It also works from the remote fob.

yep. i dont think it was sold as a taxi feature. we have 2 95 ultima saloons and both will open with the engine running. I've a feeling it has something to do with a relay i.e. a certain relay will allow the boot to open with engine running and one which will not with engine running. i've yet to test this theory using the relay from a later 96 ultima saloon.

Maybe they used this feature on earlier cars and not on later. Mine-a 98 will not open with the engine running. It would be interesting if we could narrow it down by year of manufacture. john.n ???

OK. Mine is a 1995 (november) LHD saloon. First registration: february 1996, in Germany.

The button on the luggage compartment door works anytime, regardless if the engine is running or not (provided it's unlocked, of course :) ).

The button on the remote control doesn't work when the ignition is on. I must turn the key to the first position (0) in order for the button to work. Even with the engine stopped it doesn't work if the key is in position I or II.

This behaviour looks OK to me. It seems logical and I can't complain about it.
