Title: Preparing for Winter
Post by Mike_Holmes on Sep 18th, 2004, 8:38pm
Winter is again not far off, and if the general trend is anything to go by, in my part of the country at least, it is usually characterised by copious amounts of rain and spray. Electricity and water are not compatible, so one starts to worry about all those electronic gadgets and sensors etc. I mean, it used to play havoc with the distributor on my old mini, so what could it do to a Scorpio? I've noticed Several owners have mentioned strange electrical effects, often traceable to nothing more serious than damp fuses etc.

So, I was having a good explore under the bonnet of the Exec for the first time properly, and noticed the interior was generally very clean, which is good. (Unlike some I've had.) However this also applies to the electrical connectors, which were bone dry and looking like they haven't had anything done to them since leaving the factory. Conclusion: none of the previous owners had ever heard of WD40.

So. Out with the can of WD40 and spray every electrical connector and electric device I can find. These include things like earth cable screws, horn, radiator fans, wiper linkages, hose clips and any odd rusty looking nuts and bolts (try not to get it on the 'fanbelt' though). Open the fusebox and soak the interior. Coat the battery terminals with Vaseline. Really just takes about 10 - 15 minutes but lasts for months. I also noticed much of the bare engine alloy was going furry, so I whizzed that off with a spark plug brush and wiped over with an oily rag.

The fuse box has got it's cover OK, the battery cover's on mail order this minute. Would you believe it's been used like that about 2 years previously so far as I know? I've substituted it with a dustbin liner bag in the interim. Also been reading up about the cooler pipes etc. so also need to get some more waxoyl
