Title: Pinking engine!!!!
Post by philgood on Oct 26th, 2004, 7:44pm
I’ve got a 2.9 12v Auto 1995 ultima.
On hard acceleration the engine seems to be pinking. I’ve serviced the engine (New plugs, Rota arm and cap. As well as filters etc.) but still pinking.

Has any one got any ideas?
Or
would it be worth taking it to a garage to be tuned up?
Can anyone recomend a good mobile tune up company?
And how much would I be looking at for a tune up, providing there is nothing drastic found!

If its pinking then its obviously too far advanced or running too lean,, As the 12v has a distributor it is possible to alter the ignition timing and to check it out with a strobe light ..well worth getting that done before anything else..... many of the loacal smaller garages carry that sort of equipment these days Personal recomendation is always a good way of finding a 'good' one

Phil,
The engine should never pink. As Snoopy says, this must be either timing too advanced or a weak mixture.
By all means check the timing - but the dizzy is positioned using microwaves on the production line, and the actual timing is set electronically by the ignition module, so don't move it unless you're absolutely sure the timing is wrong.
The mixture can be weakened by a faulty MAF or MAP sensor and/or a faulty fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. The best thing would be to have a proper diagnostics run on it and then you would know where you are.

Thanks for the advice.

Looks as though my next step will be booking it in for a check up.

Thanks

A dose of injector cl;eaner might help first.. put a full bottle in half a tank of petrol and run till empty.. works wonders.. I put it in every 3months or so really does keep the injectors clean and running tip top....

also check the distributor shaft for play. This used to affect the 2.8  and earlier 2.9's fitted to sierra 4x4.s

Cheers for the further information.
Providing the rain keeps off, I’ll have a look over the weekend and get back to you all with my findings (If any)

the map sensor on the right side as you look in needs a little spray of wd40 on the contacts.

I haven’t had a chance to have a look at any of the above  (Due to wife wanting house decorated).
I didn’t replace the fuel filter when I serviced the engine. I have the filter and will do the job shortly. When I change the filter I will look into the above advice as well.

Have you had similar problems?

Could you elaborate on (map sensor) for me?
What is it?
What does it look like?
What does it do?

Thanks in advance

You saying that about my cat! That is a possibility, as although it passed the emission test in it M.O.T. I did have a rattling coming from the exhaust system earlier on in the year along with a smell (which apparently is associated with a Cat. Failing) but it has now stopped.

There is an awful lot of welcome advice coming my way, and hopefully within the next week or so I can give my scorpio the love and attention it needs.

I’ll start with the easy/cheep stuff first & get back to you as to what I find.
