Title: Fitting a steering rack
Post by Chad66 on Nov 23rd, 2004, 11:24am
Hi All,

Quick question

My steering rack needs replacing. Is this a good job for a DIYer or does it need lots of mechanical knowledge and special tools?

I've been quoted £300 fitted, but can get hold of a used one in good condition for £60.

If it is DIY, how long would it normally take?

Hi Chad,

Done it twice in the last year and a half!

Not a bad job - should take 2-3 hours!

Only special tool is the track rod end splitter - but you may be able to get them off without one but is easier with!

Make sure the car is on secure axle stands (Goes without saying!) and you will find that if you jack the engine up a bit the rack will come out a bit easier!

£300 is cheap for a Ford original - give a recon one a good look over before you fit it - the first one I fitted had a small hairline crack where one of the pipes are bolted into - year and 1 month later it started to leak!!

Make sure the trackrod ends are fitted on the same side they came off and flush the system through with new fluid bleeding by turning the steering wheel lock to lock whilst topping up - the vibration that may follow will be down to the wheels being off the ground, unsupported, and should go after a day or two! (known problem!)

Take lot of measurements of the old one - this will help lining up when you fit the new one!

Hope this helps!

Daven

Thanks for that Daven,

I'm looking forward to giving this a go now....and I'm in the missus's good books for saving over 200 quid...double bonus!! ;D ;D

Might even try and take some piccies for a write up.
