Title: FRONT DOOR POCKETS.
Post by johnv on Dec 17th, 2004, 6:24pm
Ever single car I obtained had the driver side door pocket loose where the self tapping screw goes into the door. I presume they get kicked as people get out. The N/S is no longer serviced but if it was is about £40 + vat. the drivers side still is serviced at £60 + vat.
So what happens is this, when you take off the door pocket one or both holes the self tappets go through are broken. There is a little plastic centre that's breaks. I thinking of trying to get some solid brass rod or the like the same size and cutting a bit off, drilling a hole through to take the self tapper and then cementing in place with strong glue. Anyone got a better suggestion, please.

I haven't looked  at the fitting but could you not just use a suitable sized washer  secured with something like Araldite ?, Simmo

I would suggest drilling a hole right through the pocket, the doorcard, and indeed the door and using a very large bolt with an unfeasibly lage nut on the outside. not only will your pocket never come off again but your car will look hard as nails.

i don't like that bolt suggestion, it might be alright if your car is an old banger. but if your car is like it  just left the car showroom i prefer to keep it like that.
The self tapper going deep down a long sleeve (after you have prised off the oblong cover). At the bottom of the sleeve is a little plastic insert, which breaks. My suggestion is the best make a new insert and aradite it into place.
Of course you can always buy a new pocket but in this case they can be repaired.

going off subject for a moment. I noticed waders got a 2000cc scorpio. well last week i went  to pick up a set of 12 spoke wheels i won on ebay. i went there non motoway way and i went in my 2000cc scorpio 1996 frogseye model done 137,000 miles. it went really well as fast as any others cars on the road. (mine you I did not need to do any steep hill starts).
So on the way back I saw a motorway sign, so I decided to dive down that way to go home. The car was hard to hold back to 70 mph. you soon have the speed creeping up to 75 then 80 mph if you don't consentrate.
And that's with just about half throttle, no way have you got you foot hard down on the floor.
The only thing i would say is you do need to keep the oil changed more on this 2000cc engine than perhaps the others. But of course you should change the oil on the others as well as people will say to me.
Anyway, I changed my 15 inch seven egg shaped hole alloy wheels now for the 12 spoke 16 inch.
Do I notice any different. no. but they look more flash. Of course the 225X50X16 tires will cost more than the 195X65X15 ones when they need renewing but i can get bugget ones for this car as its my local car. Throught all that might be interesting or perhaps not.

on the 2.0 off topic topic i go from wales to lincs (200 miles) in mine quite often on a mixture of m-ways,a-roads and back roads. My average is 77mph and i can do a round trip on £35 of petrol easy  :) so much better than my old 5.7 chevy that was £90 round trip

Back to subject.Had same problem.Fixed by using araldite to fix washer to the pocket.Roughen plastic and ovelap washer with glue to ensure good  bond.Leave ovenight to dry.If washer hole is too small put smaller washer on self tapper.Worked a treat!

thanks to david_ south_west. i will look at that. but don't forget the self tapper has to go all the way down the long round hole. still i will have another look at what can be done before i spend £60 + vat on a new one.
