Title: 12v Hydraulic tappets or not??
Post by Ultima_Stu on Dec 29th, 2004, 5:12pm
Hopefully someone out there knows the answer.

Just picked up my parents 12v V6 (Build date SL - May 95) from a main dealer who have been trying to solve a 'stalling' problem. Their answer on the phone (having swapped the Idle control valve and then flattening the battery for a week!) is they have found another problem and set the tappet gaps. Being horrified at this suggestion I have been in and been told this has indeed been done. When questioned about this and despite fronting them with the engine blurb from here, I have been told it is an early model with conventional followers. I believed all these to be hyd from the '94 Granada! Not sure but it did seem more 'rattle' than what I remebered as it pulled away.

No guesses please, as I may have to threaten to strip the thing myself to prove somebody wrong as the engine info specifically says 'do not adjust'

yes yes yes yes

indeed you are right, all the scorpio's do indeed have self adjusting tappets........

having said that, even on the self adjusting ones,i think (have to say that) that shims can be fitted...
but according to the owners book you are right, all across the scorpio range hydrallic tappets are fitted

Stu,
There a distinct whiff of BS in the air here ...

PM me with the VIN number of the car and I'll do some research.

BTW, a stalling problem can be caused by failing HO2S sensors on the 12V as well as the 24V V6. Did they do a diagnostic check for STAR codes on the EECIV?

I've sent the VIN through, hope it helps.

As for the STAR test which I was assured had been completed and was clear, when quized they did admitted they didn't have the ability and were very dismisive of the information o this subject from an 'unknown website/source'. They have promised to get the technician to ring me back after his Christmas break. They were very against my building the interface as suggested and using their £50k machine. Surely all i then need is a Gunsons special from Halfords - circ £20?

All a bit of a farce really.

Thanks

Stu,
Yes, it's too much to hope that a MD will actually know what he's talking about: - about the Scorpio anyway.

What's probably confused them is that the hydraulic cam followers are not in the cylinder head, but mounted down in the engine block, and they act on push rods, not directly on the valve. No excusing their ignorance though - if they were to look at their catalogue they would see a schematic showing the hydraulic follower, FINIS 6577376 - and a solid follower would show as not applicable to your particular engine.  ???

They should also look up the Scorpio Workshop Manual Section 21-134-8  it not only tells them how to remove the hydraulic tappets, but also how to reassemble them.   :o

Then demand to know why they have tampered with them - no wonder they are noiser  >:( and they must put them right again  >:(

As for 'an unknown website' - many MD use us as a reference - and some have asked us for help when dealing with owner's cars - but they are not to know that.

Perhaps you'd be better off with an independant garage who knows how to read STAR codes - the lot you are dealing with are muppets - and you can quote me.  ;D

BTW, print off the Manual 21-134-8 and show it to them  ;D and don't forget to tell them it was sent to us by the CE of Ford (Europe)  8)  http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/engines/12v/V612VDismantle.pdf

Eric,
Many thanks for your input. We are in the process of drawing up 'battle plans' and I'll let you know how we get on.

Cheers.

Stu.

Hi,

SUE THEM!! You will win. FMD not knowing there own cars, I'm shocked, NOT.
But that's no excuse for saying they did work that is not possible to do on your engine!!!! As I said SUE them. Please name this FMD so no one else gets their "tappets done" ???

:o >:( :o >:( :o

There was a post on this forum about six or so weeks ago in which someone said they'd sued a FMD and cost the FMD £4000 for I think just not doing all the work for a service!! They also wrote that they had been baned from the FMD for it. I'd be suing again, but I just won't let go myself :-/

I can't find it though ???

Give them HELL.

Many thanks to one and all for the very good and sound (I believe) advice.

I have indeed now spoken with the dealer in question who have now asked for the car to be returned (or collected as required!) so a full and proper rectification can be completed.

Cheers Guys.
