Title: Gearbox fault Post by Chad66 on Feb 14th, 2005, 1:55pm For weeks now I've been thinking that I'd lost 4th gear. Took it to a gearbox specialist today and went for a test drive with their mechanic and it turns out that its 3rd gear thats gone! He tested for this by driving in D and then selecting 3 at speed, gearbox revs increased as car went into 2nd. If I had lost 4th doing this would make no difference (simple really when its explained isn't it!) Another hint was that it takes an age (well about 7-10 seconds) to take up R. Apparently 3 and R use the same brake band (?? his decription got complicated at this point....ended up giving him the Homer Simpson hard stare) Therefore in need of a recon 'box..been quoted £900. Maybe this desription might help others suffering from 'box problems. |

Title: Re: Gearbox fault Post by Vulcan on Feb 14th, 2005, 2:39pm Mine does exactly the same, I was told that it was the 3rd/reverse clutch oil seal that had "hardened" over time and was letting the oil past it unless you revved a bit when the pressure build up forced reverse to engage. 3rd gear also takes a bit of time to select after 2nd when in drive as they are on the same clutch as you say. The solution is a gearbox rebuild and I was quoted £600 My source of info is my local "expert" he has 30 years experience in autoboxes and does nothing else all day. He said he has stripped and rebuilt hundreds of the A4LD/E type boxes and I trust him implicitly. When I have the spare 600 notes mine is going in to him to be sorted. He has said that the problem shouldn't get a whole lot worse so driving it isn't a problem and as it's a whole box rebuild more damage (if any) isn't an issue. |
