Title: Ford Scorpio newbie
Post by subandrio on Feb 19th, 2005, 12:24pm
Hello Ford Scorpio Community.

I have been recently looking for a car, I've been without one for 4 years, and the other day I thought I would look seriously into purchasing a Scorpio - well spec'd and good prices when compared with the Vauxhall Omega.  I came across this site by accident and had a good look at it and i am very impressed with its wealth of information especially with the 'buying' guide.  Would you recommend I have the car inspected by the AA or RAC? I don't feel confident doing an inspection myself and I was wondering if the AA or RAC are expert enough with the Scorpio?  Would you be be able to recommend an independent inspection body. I live in the SE of England - London. How did other members buy their cars?
I've checked the Autotrader and there are a couple of nice 2.9 24V Cosworths Ultima spec costing approx £1500 with 98,000 miles - no mention of servicing history though. Anyway some informative guidance from experienced members would be highly appreciated.

Best Regards. ;D

Hi there, welcome to the Forum.

The Buyers' Guide collates all of the knowledge gained over the years on the Forum and the List and is pretty well all you need to know before buying but do your own research so that you know the correct equipment levels and how all the controls work.

If you're not very mechanical then of course you may use an AA or RAC inspection as I suggest in the Guide - but print the guide off and make sure he reads it before carrying out his checks - it may help to avoid the Granada mindset that trade people can get into, so he will be more aware of the very real differences over the Granny.

If your car is going to be used every day, be aware that the 24V will be heavier on petrol (24-26mpg) than the 2.3 (28-29mpg) or the 16V (30-32 mpg) - and much less in traffic for all of them - but for occasional long-distance touring the 24V and 2.3 would be hard to beat, while the 24V Ultima will have the highest spec.

Don't rush into a purchase and choose carefully - nowadays Scorpios are tremendous value for money. Good luck.

Where that Eric gone, that above the line is a copy and paste but can't get to come out on white back ground.

I not understanding what you said. I got
2.0 16V
2.3
2.9 24V cosworth.
The 2.0 16V has the highest spec. its got puddle lights and those red lights on the doors. (don't they look nice at night).
Don't forget that pretty light on the N/S mirror of the sun visor.
So I finding it hard to understand what my 2.9 24V has that the other cars don't. but no doubt you will tell me so that I can go running out to look at them on my cars.
Was it that you meant that the 24V had the cosworth engine so had the highest spec.

Insist on a long test drive, bring along a knowledgeable  mate  or a mechanic,  even better , access to a car hoist,   see the car starting  from  cold. Remember ,  as the buyer,  you're   in charge, take lead responsibility, and  don't   be  brow beaten into making  a quick decision.

If you have  any doubts  about the  cars history ,  documentation  or  value for money,  then keep hold of your moolah  and look elsewhere.

John.... What Eric is getting at is that an Ultima is the highest spec trim level. And the 24V is of course the top of the range engine-wise.

The problem is that there were still certain things which were options. So while one owner may have spec'd his 2.0 right up, another may have just stuck with the 'basic' 24V.

The puddle lights you use as an example are a bit of a mystery. They appear to have been fitted by Ford whenever they saw fit.

Thank you to everyone who has responded so far - your comments are greatly appreciated.  I shall, as Eric R suggests,  start to seriously do my homework and fine tune the type of car I  want.
I will of course consult the forum should I need specific clarification on a particular matter.  Saw a couple today - they look good and the interiors look even better - both of them were the Ultima spec and had full leather!
Thanks again.
Rgds :D

Whichever particluar model you go for you can be sure that the guys and gals on here will all do their very utmost to help you out with any probs you might encounter, I myself was given no end of help when I first joined and was even given some parts for FREE (MAFs aren't cheap either).

These cars do seem to have little foibles (character) but the camarederie amongst owners is what persuaded me to get another.

Puddle lights and illuminated visor were deleted along with coolant level indication on the facelift models. My S reg does however have the added safety features of side airbags and having fitted all the other bits to my previous S reg, I don't know what all the fuss was about!! I prefer 4 airbags!!

Welcome to the forums, and an excellent website. I have been made very welcome since i stumbled across the site just before christmas after buying my scorp.

I'm surprised that you have found the omega more expensive, for similar age cars they always seemed cheaper, and then you end up with a vauxhall ;D (sorry captain ;)) It may be because I was looking at diesels though.

Badboys comments about the airbags reminds me of an amusing but cheesy advert involving neil morrisey and leslie ash a while back, extolling the virtues of the saftey aspects of a car, can't remember the car though...so in effect funny but may not have worked!!
