Title: Tinted Rear lights Post by Highlander on Feb 25th, 2005, 10:57am Saw the saloon on the site with the back lights tinted black and it looks great!! I think it would look really good on my dark aubergine saloon too as i've never been really keen on the look of the rear light cluster... theres just something not right there.. cant put my finger on it... either too low.. too small....dunno :) Anyway thing I'm concerned about is.. is it legal??? second thing i'm concerned about (Being Scottish) Halfords want £15!!! for a tiny wee spray can of the stuff!!! Anyone able to shed light on the first one and undercut the second? ;) Cheers HL http://atlas.walagata.com/w/highlander250469/Scorpio_rear_lights.jpg |

Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by low_tom on Feb 25th, 2005, 3:58pm if you want to do a dry run, nick some of your missus' black stockings and pull them tight over the light lenses, should give you an idea of the final effect. As for doing it cheaper,or to be different, mix 5% body colour with 95% clear lacquer and spray over your existing lenses. ;) |

Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by craig on Feb 25th, 2005, 7:49pm yes that is kevs car... and yes,he still does have it,(well at the moment anyway, very soon it will be being driven around the roads of somerset ;))..... but back to the original question,to tint the rear lights, kev used the aerosol spray stuff you can buy in halfords, and if i remember correctly,he only used the 2 layers, any more than 2,and the bulbs are quite difficult to see.... HTH |

Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by Baz on Feb 25th, 2005, 11:20pm I started to do my spare facelift rear set yesterday with the spray stuff. As for being legal, does anyone remember the rear lights from the J and K reg Sierras, they were almost black and then there was the rear lights on the late granadas again, very dark compared to the earlier models Sorry about the fingerprint!! Found a pic of the Sierra rear lights Or this one from the celco website |

Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by Geoff_W on Feb 25th, 2005, 11:49pm Evening Baz, Would these darkened covers then be candidates for LED rear bulbs? Geoff |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by Baz on Feb 25th, 2005, 11:52pm I think they just might you know!! although the Sierra never had such luxuries Baz (You read my mind sometimes Geoff!!) Where have you been lately then? |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by Geoff_W on Feb 26th, 2005, 12:12am Well, life has been pretty hectic, mostly work and not enough time for serious fun stuff like Scorps. I may not be around much in reality but am certainly here in spirit. I thought LEDs cos I seem to remember that they are brighter. Certainly the ones that I have seen in Beemers and the like. Its an interesting theme because I think that whilst the Scorpio rear lights are good, they really could do with being better. Yours is going to be quite spectacular with the Angel Eyes and tints at the back. |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by geraghtyg on Feb 26th, 2005, 1:06am I personally think the rear lights on the facelift Scorpio are much better (and brighter?!?) than the earlier Scorpios! One question though; can you just replace the regular brake light/tail light/indicator lights with LEDs? Is it just a matter of taking out the regular bulb and sticking in an LED equivalent? I wonder if you can get these bulbs in Halfords? We actually have Halfords in Ireland now, as of a few months ago! |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by Highlander on Feb 26th, 2005, 8:52am Yep I remember the Sierra lights, I'll give it a go and see what happens... ;) thanks all ;D |

Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by dexix on Feb 26th, 2005, 10:32am Yes Graham you can get the equivalent bulbs for the rear lights - they look exactly the same apart from instead of having a glass bulb they have a cluster of led's, there are different ones for cars with combined brake and tail lights and rear fogs etc and they have the added benefit of lasting longer. I bought a pair but they did not appear to be any brighter than normal bulbs on mine. But i agree that facelift rear lights are brighter than pre facelift as when I had my 1996 scorp I compared the two together. Nick |

Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by Baz on Feb 26th, 2005, 11:12pm It happens on here quite a lot. If you don't have an answer in the first few replies, you aint getting one. Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by johnv on Feb 27th, 2005, 6:07pm well i don't know, so no good asking me. but I trying hard to use what brain I got. The law say white to the front and red to the rear. so as long as the rear lights shine red and the brake lights shine red, is that not complying with the law. Of course the Police can have blue ones when they are dashing back for their cup of tea. |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by johnv on Feb 27th, 2005, 7:07pm they have been on ebay all the time. leds instead of bulbs. I often wonder what they where like. Still I won't bother now that someone is saying they are no brighter. but face lift ones are brighter, well i going to try mine out tomorrow, to cold to-night. did not realise that. |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by Nick_H on Mar 1st, 2005, 10:46am To get back to the original question - I think the tinted lights are legal but you may have a problem if your reflectors are too dark to work properly. Yes, reflectors... Remember those? A rough MOT Guide says: Stop lights, indicators and hazard lights: * Are the correct type and colour Rear reflectors: * There must be two reflectors fitted reasonably symmetrically, securely attached and not obscured. Some MOT testers are more pedantic than others, of course... |

Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by geraghtyg on Mar 2nd, 2005, 10:44am Although slightly off-topis, is it possible to get LED parking lights forn the front. The little 5w wedge bulbs or whatever wattage they are appear to be very yellow due to the type they are. Is there an LED wedge shaped equivalent which would give off white instead of yellow light? |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by dexix on Mar 2nd, 2005, 9:54pm I have just bought a pair of blue wedge type LED bulbs to put in my scorpio sidelights Graham and they look very well made, but as the weather is so bad I have not had a chance to try them. I got them from a guy on ebay who sells loads of LED lights and they came very quickly. Nick |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by geraghtyg on Mar 2nd, 2005, 11:45pm Nick Were the LEDs an obvious blue or just a blue tint? I don't want something that will attract the local gardaí (police) - I've been pulled over a couple of times for being young and driving a "high powered" vehicle that looks like an unmarked Garda car - I've been asked why did I buy such a car in such a color (state blue) as they have said that I am trying to impersonate a Garda vehicle ??? so I bamboozle them with information about the Scorpio and then they just go away ;) |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by craig on Mar 3rd, 2005, 6:51am i have blue LED'S in my sidelights, and to tell you the truth, they only look really nice when the ignition is OFF and the car is parked up with the sidelights left on :'( :'(. when actually driving with only the sidelights on,the actual blue effect is minimal, solely because you also have the white light coming from the headlight bulb as well.................... but for the sake of a few quid,i think it was worth it... HTH CRAIG.. |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by dexix on Mar 3rd, 2005, 3:01pm The effect craig has described is what I am after as there are too many traffic police in my area to push any colouring too far! Hopefully by the weekend I will have them fitted and if they look good enough will take a picture for all to see. Nick |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by craig on Mar 3rd, 2005, 4:21pm they also look a little "tasty" in the side repeaters, especially behind crystal lenses....... :) that reminds me to take a trip to "bridgie" at about 3 in the morning ;) |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by johnv on Mar 3rd, 2005, 9:10pm i was under the impression that only the emergency services could show blue lights. but have you seen them windscreen washers on the bonnet that are real bright blue. I was thinking of painting my headlights black, with some matt blackboard paint until I relised I might not be able to see where I was going. |
Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by craig on Mar 4th, 2005, 9:02pm dont know if these will help at all,but here are a couple of pics of the blue led's i have in place in my sidelights.... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v399/rocky-stones/leds002.jpg the above is with the sidelights on,but with-out the engine running... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v399/rocky-stones/leds005.jpg the above is with the sidelights on,and the engine running.... |

Title: Re: Tinted Rear lights Post by geraghtyg on Mar 8th, 2005, 10:23pm I got a pair of blue parking lights in Halfords. There were really dark tinted blue and lighter blue tints. I got the lighter ones. When I fitted them during daylight hours, the difference appeared to be minimal. However, when I looked at them at nite time, they were a lovely pure white color instead of the yukky yellow tinge you normally get from them. They were also way way brighter than the old bulbs. I wanted LEDs but they'll do the job nicely for the time being. |
