I did not want to write this yet, as I've had no time for testing.
But to save people going down the same route here is an update of what I know.

USA remotes
most of Fords 1993-1996 have the same physical case as our Scorpio ones.
That is 3 oval holes with 3 oblong buttons. Usually the 3rd button is for PANIC

The newer ones are slightly smaller and the lock button has a bit missing (like a bite)
these are not physically comparable in anyway.

Also some USA Mazda models look the same physically.
And it looks like some dodge ones as well.

Nearly all the Ford divisions i.e. Lincons, Mercury's etc.have the same remote (physically).
Some times four buttons; lock/unlock/boot/panic.

As I said previously my aim was to find replacement buttons.
I still have not had time to test yet (working as usual)

But did have a sneak look in the middle of the night
the circuit board does have a different layout but the buttons look like they will work.

Just to reiterate, the USA remote is 318MHz, UK some manufactures 418MHz
and UK / Europe 433.92Mhz I believe the Scorpio is 433.92 as the remotes from Ford Germany (which are about 10% cheaper than UK)
are identical. Probably because like my Scorpio. Its VIN number breaks down to show my car manufactured in Cologne Germany.

As for the question of codes a simple register in a computer chip will give you 65000 possibilities and I'm sure Ford would have made them a bit more than simple.

As for the codes in the chips (in the remote) If a Scorpio PATS module will recognise these. Not known yet

The next problem will be changing the frequency of the USA remote for UK to enable testing.
I don't have time at the moment for this, so anybody with electronic skills who could identify the chips pins would be most help full.

And finally for now, you can get second hand remotes in the USA for about 10-15 dollars,
brand new ones for 40-60 dollars which with posting = about 35 pounds.

I'm a bit curious as to what the "Panic" button is for.

A panic button, on alarms I have encountered at least, allows you to set the alarm off from the fob, perhaps if you see someone about to have a go at your car while parked outside your house or sommat :)

what about "anti hijack"......

once had a car with this funtion,(typical american),IF your just about to be hijacked,you press a button on the remote,and exactly 3 minutes later (just about time for mr."give us your car" to thinks he's away on his heels) the car disables it'self................
amazing... :o :o :o
