Title: Wheel  Balance
Post by mr._floppy on Mar 24th, 2005, 9:23pm
Don't  know if you get this problem,   when  getting new tyres  the  lad doing the balancing  on the  wheel   always puts the lead   weight(s)  on the  outside  rim  of the alloys  rather than the  inside  rim   ( spoils the look, I'm sure  you'll agree )    and I always politely ask them  to  re-do  them  with the weights in the right place . This is done to the sound of much  muttering  along the lines of   " don't  expect  the wheels to be balanced  perfectly   then ".

Does it matter which side of the wheel  the  weights  are placed  or are they  just  being  awkward?

Any  tyre  fitters out  there ?

hi there

what a load of rubbish! >:( they just change a dial setting on the machine and that's it. there's a name/term for doing it, but i can't remember at the moment.

you can use stick on weights or the newer slim profile weights on the inside rim.

Absolutely right.

And another thing... the Scorpio's rims (12-spokes anyway) don't have a lip to take the knock-on weights.

Hi to all
I agree and what is more I have just had a set of new tyres put on the front and I watched the guy doing them. when he came to balance them. He cleaned right inside the back of each wheel with a cleaning agent and stuck slim line weights right inside up to the front edge and on the back of the wheels outer edge he used the tap on type. the only way you can see any weights is if you look through the spokes but you never put weights on the front of alloy wheels it spoils the look! I would use another tyre fitters if I was you!!.

My car has the older  circular cut-out alloys  which  do  have  a rim ,  but as it turned out the wheel was  balanced  perfectly with the weights hidden away on the inner rim.    ( which  doesn't  get  kerb bashed and  so  the weight  is less likely to fall off )

Don't take any lip from these bum fluff faced  trainees.

Recently had new tyres on the 12-spoke alloys. All weights on the inside. Agree with others - it would look ghastly on the outer rim.
