Title: Tyre pressures
Post by km449 on Apr 12th, 2005, 4:44pm
I run a 97 2.3 Ultima Estate with 225's, usually with a load of 2 adults and 1 child

Handbook recommends 29f/26r but |'ve noticed some members saying they run at 31psi all round.

What's the view/advice here re pressures - I don't do high speed motorway runs very often (and def not on the M4!!)

Hello,
I wasnt sure what psi for my tyres eithyer.
So I did the obvious as my tyers are new. I checked the side walls for max PSI.
I always drive on max PSI as ive always got loads of weight on them. I casually have 5 adults in daily me at 12 stone the lightest. Then bags of pete and bark in the boot. Topped with stuff on the roofrack with a bursting trailor. So I have mine at 40PSI all round. As the walls state for max.
Horses for couses really.
Different size and make will proberly be different.
Regards....

Same size 225 tyres here, but rarely have the car fully loaded.
I find the handbook figures of 31f & 29r pretty sound.

Just because tyre manufacturer says 40 psi is the max does not mean that's what you shold run at fully loaded....40psi is very hard must be like driving on solid rubber wheels

I run mine @ 31 all round and find that handling on 'B' roads feels a lot "safer" than running them at 35 and above

hi there

well i've put the pressures up to 31 all round. front ok, a wee bit hard ride. back, too hard. much too hard for my liking, so i'll put it to 29.

i'm a bit confused at all the tyres pressures quoted ???. i posted pressures of 29 front and 26 rear as per my h/book (31 front and 28 rear for the 24v). see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/handbook146.gif that's from h/book version enRHD297. what version h/book are the other pressures from? just trying to find out if there was a change in spec at some time.

Keep an eye on the wear pattern of your tyres, too much wear on the outsides (both edges) means running generally too soft.
Premature wear in the centre means too hard.

It used to be that manufactures would recommened slightly softer pressure for better grip/handling. If you run them slightly higher you can get better fuel consumption. Not a lot though.
This also leads to a harder ride. So long as you can get even wear, a few psi difference just means a hard or a softer ride.

I got my pressure reading from the tyre wall. Also backed up yesterday by my tyre specialist who fitted them.
People may think im bonkers but. I honestly cant tell the difference hard or soft tyres as for the smoothness of the ride.
However braking I see alot of difference. Needing little longer to stop. I just leave a bigger gap with the car infront. Also fuel and the performance are much better.

i do indeed owe you an apollogy :'( :'(,i have just checked the suplement that came with my handbook, and for a 2.3 you are indeed right, the pressures should be
29 in the fronts
and
26 in the rears
hope i'm forgiven ??? :-/.. ;) ;)

hi craig

no probs. :)

having the front at 31 is a more 'sporty'. i can put it into corners better, but the back can get a little 'floaty', if i push on a bit! ;)

I run my 2.3 saloon at around 30 psi all round. I monitor the tread wear across the tyre  approx. every couple of months for even wear. If the outer or inner is wearing more than the other, I just increase or decrease accordingly. Makes sure you get the full use out of the tyres especially at the price they are.

RE (Needing little longer to stop. I just leave a bigger gap with the car infront)
You may get no choice if someone pulls out in front of you...... I think noticing an increase in breaking distance would be enough to prove 40lbs pressure is too much

Even with 31 PSI  in the  tyres they still  look a  bit  soft.   I  bet  with  40 in the front  the steering must as  light as a feather!!

Thats where planning way ahead, and way two the sides makes a healthy safe ride.
I dont flog the car I hardly move infact 60 tops on a clear motorway.
However if im due bad weather rain ect. I take air out  to about 33PSI.
Infact when the snow comes and its bad. Im down to 20 PSI.

my tyres are on 30 all round and the car seems to run fine but saying this i do check that the front ones are wearing evenly ie i check the walls and the middle and they seem to be ok  ;D

i've got 205 tyres, i didn't kow how much to put on, and i'm keeping them at 2.2 BAR.

So to summarise ....you have to reduce tyre pressure by 30% if it rains and your stopping distance has increased , you trust a tyre expert that says this is ok  , risk your insurance being invalid and being prosecuted for incorrectly inflated tyres...and you think this is ok to  pass this advice on to others ?  How strange

Title: Re: Tyre pressures
Post by derekne on Apr 19th, 2005, 1:02pm
I already told you that you would find it strange. Also im not telling everyone else to do it. Im only joining in on the thread. Im just stateing my own personal tyer psi.
I also said that It says on my tyer walls max PSI. I also said that my tyer specialist confirmed this. I dont pay 3 or £400 for tyers im not as rich as most. So I dowt many others would have the same lower class tyers as mine.
"Its a funny world. :D"

Derek,
Modern radial tyres do look soft compared to the old cross-plys - they have a different construction and greater flexion and roadholding.   ;)

Whatever your tyre specialist says - he is probably confirming that the max psi is 40, not that you should actually run at that pressure - you should inflate your tyres to the pressure stated in the vehicle handbook, and this is your responsibility as the vehicle driver, not his.

The vehicle manufacturer has already calculated the correct pressure for the tyre size and rating for the different weights on each axle - these differ according to engine and body.  The stated pressure will keep the 'footprint' of the tyre at the ideal size for efficient braking, steering and water-clearance.  Running at 40 psi is far too high - 30% over-pressure  :o - and in the event that you have a serious accident your tyres and pressures will be checked as part of the routine vehicle examination by police, who are quite likely to summons you for tyres incorrectly inflated and dangerous condition.   :'(

Having heard that, your Insurance company will happily reject any claim you make, because your vehicle must be fully roadworthy in all respects to be insured.

I earnestly advise you for all these reasons to follow the vehicle handbook and keep to recommended pressures.

So to come full circle, having started this thread, there's no common demoninator

I asked the question simply as my 225's are crashy around town at 29/26, checked weekly and with even wear.

Sorry if I set a hare running!!

KM,
Different makes of tyres are more 'crashy' than others.

My set of Pirelli P6000 were dreadfully noisy over bumps and potholes and very noisy IMO at high speeds with a loud roar that became wearing.  See http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/michelins.htm

My current Michelin Pilot Primacy are excellent - smooth and forgiving over potholes and soothing at high speeds.  In town at 40 they are virtually silent, which is the way I like 'em.

I use 31 F and 28 R on my estate and I get good even wear.

hi there

i though i'd do an update.

front now at 31psi
rear now at 29psi

imo, for the 2.3 estate anyway, this seems to be the best combination.
