Title: Handbrake
Post by mr._floppy on May 4th, 2005, 5:08pm
Does anyone know  the acceptable   lateral  movement  of  the  handbrake  handle for the MOT?

I find the whole handbrake  handle mechanism  rather flimsy    ( just pressed steel and a few rivets,   most unsatisfactory ) ,   I can easily  get  10-15 mm  of side to side  movement when  handbrake fully on.

I'm not sure if the side 2 side movement of the lever counts for the MOT  :-/

I would have thought that if it works correctly you should be OK.

the middle button on my handbrake sticks slighty then when i move it slighty to my left hand side its works fine but i think that could fail my mot when its due .

If you need to read the MOT manual on the handbrake then its here for you
http://www.ukmot.com/3-1.asp

If there is too much lateral movement on the handbrake lever then the pawl can diengage and allow the handbrake to release, that is what they are checking fo.

there is no actual measurement for the MOT test, the tester will make his own judgement as long as it functions correctly.

as long as the actual lever stays in place, and doesn't 'release' when moved side to side, it will pass ok. should the thing release when pushed to the side, then you've got a fail my son!
