Title: Caveat regarding front brake pads
Post by Roger_Ashford on Jun 22nd, 2005, 4:39pm
I changed the front disks & pads on my 98 Scorpio Ultima Cosworth the other day. The description given on this site for the job was spot on, but a word of warning: When I came to offer up the new pads to the caliper, they didn't fit. I checked them against the old pads and found that the new pads were a different size and the backing plates were a different shape.

I had been quite precise in specifying what I wanted when I bought them from the local MegaSpares, so I was a little miffed when I went back and asked them to give me the correct ones. The guy showed me the catalogue, and sure enough the ones he had sold me were for my model: we matched the old ones up to the 2.3 model, so either the catalogue was wrong or they had run out of the correct calipers when my car was assembled.

As you have to cut off the brake pad wear  indicator lead when fitting the pads, it's a good idea to check them against your old ones first!

I have had this a few times. Most after market manufacturers get them wrong and the only ones I have found that get it exactly right is Unipart. Even Ford supplied me two wrong sets of pads before I gave up and went to the local motor factors!

Thats interesting about the wear indicators, cos they never made any of thes new Scorps with them did they?
And yet all the suppliers give you the option of with or without.
Cheaper without and thats what I bought last time.

hi there

front pads on the 2.3 (maybe the 2.0) are the same as the '97-'00 mondeo.

I too have had the wrong pads supplied, by FMD & local factors, for my 2.9 12v. It has always been the fronts they get wrong so I keep an old front pad to take with me when I need new ones. They can get it wrong with or without wear indicators !

While I'm a fan of the Scorps  Gizmos and innovations  the Dashboard  Brake Pad wear indicators  ( which I think were fitted to the  Granada range )  are thankfully  not present  on  the Scorpio.   A bit like headlamp washers, these extras are just  for the lazy or dopey.  With alloys fitted  it only takes a second   to  check  the calipers  and see  the  pad wear  for yourself.

I take it you have a poverty model and lack these 'gismos'

With the streamlined shape of the Scorp headlights I find that they are hardly ever dirty ebven on mucky days.
Yet to try a bit of rallying, my girlfriend probably won't speak to me for a week if I did.
