Title: Transmission oil colour
Post by km449 on Jul 23rd, 2005, 7:22pm
Hi - the colour of the oil in my auto box is very light brown, but there is none of the rancid (chip shop) smell referred to elsewhere on this site.
Car is going fine and I just wondered what the colour signifies.
There's no sludge on the dipstick either.
Thanks
Keith

That is the colour it should be M8
A redish /brown, if it was black you need to worry.

When I replaced the auto trans.  cooler recently  the colour  of the  gunk  coming out of the old one was very brown  and viscous yet the  fluid  on the  dipstick  was  OK.  It shows that while automatic  fluid  changing  is better than nothing  only severe  flushing of the system  really shifts the damaging  contaminants  within the pipework and the  galleries of the  gearbox.
