Hi all,

We're travelling down to Cornwall for a week on Monday so I'm gonna treat the engine to some of Magnetec's finest.
As i've only had the car for about 6 weeks this will be my first Scorpio oil service etc and wondered if there should be anything I will need to know before starting?

I am yet to get under the car (Had a quick look before I bought it for rust etc..) Does the lower engine trays have to be removed to get at the sump plug and filter?

wayne..
ALWAYS use a quality oil,and when replacing the oil filter,make sure you use a genuine ford one,the filter contains a one way valve which holds oil in for the start up process......
when was the car last serviced ?
apart from that,have i good time in cornwall,and if you pass through somerset,look out for me ;)....

Hi Wayne,

The trays will have to come off.

Also, have a look at the sump plug before you start, there's been numerous cases of them being right bu**ers to get off (I know I've been there!!), usually needing a replacement, there is a modded version of the sump plug available from Ford which overcomes the problem.

Oil filter is only accessible from underneath.

Other than that, there is nothing especially difficult in doing the service on these cars.

Not that my car has one, but others will tell you that there will be no harm in cleaning the MAF whilst doing the service....seems to work wonders apparently ;D

I picked up 5 litres of Magnatec 5w30 yesterday and almost bought a Halfords oil filter. Luckily they had 2 variations of the Scorpio filter-1 was longer than the other yet both for the same car....apparently. I opted for a genuine Ford filter instead then atleast I know its the right 1!

The car supposedly had a service last November carried out by the previous owner (about 8,000 miles ago) though there are no receipts for the parts etc so I'm not convinced???

I thought there were compatability issues with the new sump plug? Or is that just an issue with the 24v's? I'll check it out when its removed and play it by here.
The MAF was spotless when I looked a few weeks ago-had that removed when changing the old cracked auxillary belt.
(Which, if you ever do yours-leave the Halfords belts alone-they're a tad too short, and no matter how hard you try-it just won't go over the last little bit! Fords, however. was tight but slipped on with a little effort!)

Oh, and Craig-we're heading for Fowey which I believe is near to St Austell-probs quite a way from you, but will keep my eyes peeled none the less! :o ;)

Yeah, I've had the same experience with the filters from Halfords...one is long and thin, the other short and fat...

To be honest i've always put on a Champion C102 which is the short fat one....

How much did Ford charge for a proper one?

On a similar point while I remember...there is also inconsistency with the air filter given in the Halfords catalogue, where the Halfords and the Champion parts are 2 different sizes (on the 12v anyway)....For my car the Halfords one is the right size...

Aux belt cost £17.82 Finis number 1068252

Sub total £31.99
VAT £5.60
Total £37.59

Remember-the above parts are for the 2.3 so may be different for yours. I haven't fitted the oil or filter as yet but IIRC the oil filter is similar to the long thin Halfords filter. I'll measure them when fitting ;)

Right then-oil service finally done....ish!!!

What a major pain in the ass that was!!!
Sump plug and washer were fine, even got the old filter off without too much trouble-but what an evil place to put it!!!
Never known such an awkward position!

After all the mess from the filter was cleaned up, and clean oil smeared on the new filters O ring, I fitted it and replaced the sump plug then filled the engine with oil.
I filled it to the max line, then started the engine and let it run for a few minutes to allow the filter to fill. I then stopped the engine and topped up the oil level to the max line. Job done!

A quick check underneath to ensure the sump plug wasn't leaking, but instead noticed the filter couldn't have been seated correctly(???) and was losing a little oil down the side of the sump.
Hoping it was residual oil I wiped the sump and left it for 20 minutes! Still leaking!!!
Cut a long story short-I had to drain the oil, replace the new filter with old one and refill. After looking at the new filter the O ring looked a little "perished" so could be the cause of the leak?

I'm really miffed as a 30 minutes job ended up taking me almost 2 hours (Had problems removing the new filter)

You live and learn-though I still can't believe how difficult the oil filter is to get at!

your dead right if your arms are wider than a midgets with bone thinning disease then your in trouble!!!! gota try and get mine off soon ??? ???

I must admit the Scorp is the first car I've had that has proved too difficult to do the oil change myself ( getting too old and fat ;D) my old Audi 80 was a real pig but bearable. As Waynem325 says, the filter has been placed in the most awkward area of the engine with the only access being from underneath. This plus the need for the splash guard removal ( although the chap from National Tyres did mine without removal ) makes it not worth it . Do yourself a favour, for £15 for a filter and oil change get Kwik-fit or National to do it.
