2.0,2.3 and the 24v all use the A4LDE

seems like that ...but in fact all three gearboxes are slightly different and you would be best advised obtaining the one for your model really .. regards .....STN

Martin,
Yes, this question has been asked before.  STN's quite right, there are detail differences inside the A4LDE autoboxes because of the different torque demand.  Although all the 'boxes are externally identical the internal arrangements of the Reverse/Direct Drive and the Forward clutches are as folllows:

The 24V has 6 friction and 6 steel plates in both the R/DD clutch and the F clutch.

The 2.3 has 5 friction and 5 Steel plates on both the R/DD and the F clutch

The 2.0 has 4 friction and 4 steel plates on the R/DD clutch and 5 on the F clutch.

For this reason it is advisable to use a reputable specialist and make sure that the correct 'box is fitted from the outset - or get them to rebuild your own box, this makes sure that the job is done right.   ;)

Guys & I thought the bell housings was the only difference?
I reckon you could fit a 2.9 or 2.3 to a 2.0L then but not a 2.0 to a 2.3 or 2.9 due to it not being "man" enougth to handle the torque?
That would be good news for 2.0 owners as they seem quite hard to get but there is plenty of Cossie auto's they could fit?
I know not ideal but would save a few from the scappy.
