Hi All
Catalytic Converter packed in today. Been pricing new one and found there are two types ceramic and steel. Anyone know if there is any real difference between the two ?

Hi Andy .. most cats are ceramic ..ie; a ceramic monolith .. they are fairly tough nowadays but can still be damaged very easily by impact or harsh temperature changes .. a manufacturers catalyst is usually about 400 honeycombs to the square inch and race cats can be 200 or sometimes one hundred .. overfuelling < or "bump starting " on manual gearboxes can melt a cat in seconds > and damage is the main reason for cat break up ..once the element suffers damage or erosion at the front of the monolith then it quickly degrades into "lumps" of ceramic which then get blown through the exhaust sytem ..sometimes blocking centre or rear boxes .. a " steel " cat < in most cases > is actually a metallic substrate cat and is usually stronger .. metal cats are not readily available from spurious sources due to the expense but they are becoming more common .. hth ....regards .....STN

Offside ceramic monolith cracked,so need to replace it. Is it ok to fit steel monolith on offside whilst having ceramic monolith on the nearside.

Can I ask how you know when its gone?

I got a rattler on my hands (I think) but I haven't really noticed a sudden lack in performance. It still goes really well. :-/

Hi Andy,

When I went to Weston S. Mare a week or so ago I was told that my N.S. CAT' was rattling ( 63,000 miles ) and subsequently purchased a ceramic at £200.11 + carriage + VAT. A local garage fitted it, no problem BUT the CAT had to be removed because the threaded bush into which the sensor screws was welded in the wrong place, pointing up towards the engine sump. The new CAT had to be removed, the old one fitted again and I subsequently receivd a far better replacement CAT which is now fitted. The replacement CAT was about 2Kg heavier, more metal and better made.
