Title: Kimi pictures Timing chains.
Post by howiedintheplace on Oct 4th, 2005, 11:30pm
This may be of use to others.

I was striping a engine today & as Kimi is about to do his timing guides I offered to take some pictures for him.

Interesting that this engine had just been fitted with new timing gear but as the old broken bits had not been cleaned out of the sump about £1000 of work was about to be wasted as the oil pick up was starting to block up.

Instructions here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/timingchain29.htm

Pictures in random

Hi Dave,
( or should that be Mr Bailey ) The pictures are great, they want putting on the main site to go with the the instructions.Did you strip the engine with a view to rebuilding it or are you selling the parts??? As I would be interested in the chains, crank sprocket, cam sprockets and possibly the adjusters if they are still in good condition. It's fairly easy to tell if the chains are worn,I wouldn't want the guides unless they are in excellent condition as they are cheapish anyway. But I am jumping the gun, sorry. So let me know. On a different note I am thinking of converting my Scorp to manual, because I have all the parts except the clutch which will not be too expensive. What do you think ?? I've been told that it will increase the value of the car?? The other reason is the auto box thumps into 2nd & 3rd until it warms up, but if I select sport mode it doesn't it's smooth. So its the cheaper option to change to manual than rebuild the autobox ( plus the last autobox I rebuilt was in a Rover V8 many years ago.....Kimi....

Kimi
Not selling the engine as it is going to be a 3.1 twin turbo & it had about £1000 of new parts fitted including all the timing gear before I striped it.

Manual Scorpio?
Talk to STN (Bill) on this site as he does them.

It is not as easy as it sounds as the engine + auto work together & the engine does not run correctly with out it.

When Cosworth was working on the engine. Some Scorpio pre production cars had manual boxes for the dyno work. Software was developed to remap the engine to run with a manual box.
I am in contact with a guy who had the software & I am hoping he can find it as Cosworth has destroyed most of the stuff they did for the car including some 4.0L 24V Cosworth engines they was working on >:(
Not sure how STN does it but the software is the ideal solution.

Hi there,

I have a Cosworth engine completely stripped and spare.  What happened to mine was that I had a full timing chain replacement then after 10 miles driving the engine completely stopped due to one of the cam-shafts being ripped out of the head!!!

We suspect that the garage that did the timing chain work messed up somwehere along the line by either loosening or over-tightening the cam-shaft fixing bolts (only one cam-shaft came away).

Therefore I have a set of new guides (although the guide you see in your picture number 10, the black central one is not available), chains and anything else that may be of use ;)

I have been told by a head specialist that the heads can be easily repaired, in fact it's only the left bank head that will require work.  Will need most of the cam-shaft fixing bolt threads for the far left cam-shaft helicored.  I was quoted £10 per helicore.

Well I started to price & order the parts for the 3.7 until I figured the engine was no good for high boost, so that was a shame :'( as that would have gone well.
Just about to start the new block.
Will use a 95 mm bore, new forged pistons, 7.1 compression & the best bit a girdle which should let me rev to around 7000 - 7500 rpm. A 24V makes more & more power the higher you can get it to rev up to a point of course.
Thats the main stuff but will also employ little tweaks here & there ;)

Been trying to get some cheap rods from Norway & prices for nitriding as I have a mate out there with some good contacts.

Anyway my engine will be simliar to a track 24V so I know roughly what I will get.
Will have a 3 stage variable boost @ 6 psi = 300 bhp, 12 psi = about 390 bhp & 23 psi about 500 bhp.

Heres a graph for a 5 psi BOB of the kinda spec I am building.

A Bit OFF-TOPIC

Sounds verry nice, turbo + manual @ 500 HP ......want to brake the land speed record ????, hey but if you do it it would be in style, don't forget to add to guiness book that you have, TCS,ABS,AIR-BAG,lether seats, cd-changer,electric windows,.......and lots more.............. ;D

Let us know how your work is going and good luck

Well I will have ABS & electric windows but not much else as the engine will be in a Sierra XR4x4 ;D

Sorry guys but the Scorpio is just to heavy even with 500 bhp & I need 4 wheel drive so I can get the power down. 8)
I reckon it would be possible to fit 4x4 to the Scorpio but then the weight goes up even more :(

As the pictures in the first post are on photobucket I thought I'd host them elsewhere before they disappear like other photobucket pictures.

Hi @howiedintheplace ,

What you need is a 4X4 Cosworth 24V Puma to squeeze that Engine in  ;D

I still got mine, no time to do anything with it now, open to sensible offers, still complete, and running and driving but needs paintwork ;)

Cheers Dave
