Title: Front wish bones
Post by janspeed on Nov 1st, 2005, 4:11pm
Just had my M.O.T. :( and failed on both front wish bones, :( the bushes have gone.
And as we know FORD only do the whole unit.
At £115.56 each i`m in for a big bill. :(
Any advice?

Try www.FordParts UK.com (http://www.fordpartsuk.com/) for a start. They should be cheaper than your local Ford dealer.

Jay,
Did the MOT guy say the bushes and not the balljoint?
The bushes are replaceable, Finis 7372344 at the front and 7307405 for the rear, about £10 and £20 respectively.

The ball joint itself is engineered into the radius arm and it is this that can't be replaced and means the new arm.  The bushes often go well before the ball joint.

My last radius arm was replaced because of an advisory for the ball joint, I got mine from fordpartsuk much less than your quote, so try there first - Paul is quite right.

Jay

ive just passed an MOT with wishbones off a scrapper, maybe not the ideal but they were good and its passed and all it cost was my time changing them over.

Budget motoring at its best!!  ;D

Highlander,
did you have any trouble getting the bolts out of the bushes?  Did you change the bushes or use them as is?

Came out fairly well Eric, although I know they were only fitted to the donor vehicle last July.
Used them with the bushes that were on them.

Thanks for the help guy`s.
I will ask the mot guy what it failed on exactly, (bush or the ball joint).

Good news.
Its the bushes that are worn, so no need to replace the whole thing.
£4.99 + vat for the fronts and £16.99 + vat for the rears.
Total of £51.65. i`ve ordered the bolts too so bang another £10 on top maybe.
£61.65.
Ford parts quoted £236.43 inc the delivery, cheaper than ford by a long shot.
And thanks to you guys you saved me £174.93.
Thank you. ;D

Regards.

I knew the rearmost  bushes were easily replaced  but  I was  surprised the front bushes   were replacable ,  I figure the old ones can be destroyed on removal, how does one get the  new ones  in ?

BTW Janspeed, did you not notice vague  and  wandering  steering  before the MOT ?

The front bush has to be destroyed to remove it from posts in the past. but they are BOTH  replaceable.

From past memories can be a little dificult to insert the new front one, but I am sure that thos ewho have done this job will advise... I think Scorpio man was one of them!

Hi.
Mr Floppy.
The steering was ok as far as the vagueness and wandering, but under braking there was a wobble. Under light braking it was severe, but as you applied more pressure it stopped.
Leading me to believe that it was warped disc`s, but they are fine.
My other new problem is that the diesel injectors are now shot, pushing up the emisions. £40 each plus vat to have them overhauled. Doh.
Any way i`ll get there eventually.

I too get  slight  steering wobble  on light braking ( but not when it's raining strangely ) and the steering  is  rather  scary when  windy ( I think Scorpios are fair weather cars  ;D) and  sensitive  to white line , road  imperfections, Etc.  I suspect the wishbone bushes are  soft,   although they passed muster at the MOT  recently.   Keep us informed   how the  bush replacement goes,  I might   have a go replacing mine in the new year.

Ok mr floppy will do.
Mine does tend to tram line too, i put it down to the 225`s i fitted along with the 16" 7J 7 spoke alloys.
But my Capri does the same on 205`s, no wish bones on the Capri.

Yes, the front bush has a lip on both ends that can be a bind to push through.  The best tip is to use fairy liquid on the bush, a long bolt and washers on both ends.  You put the radius arm in a vise, put the bolt through the bush and arm with a washer between the bolt and bush, and the other end of the radius arm.  As you wind the bolt up it pulls the bush through the arm.

I have a Ford void bush tool, but it's the wrong diameter unfortunately.  ::)

Most people don't recommend burning the bushes out as it can weaken the metal.
The way I would do it if you don't have the right tool is to cut the lip off one side of the bush. Then drill holes in it , so it is like swiss cheese, then it knocks out with a hammer. 8)

Hi all.
My Scorp now has 12 months M.O.T.
Replaced the front wish bone arm bushes, a new flexi hose for the off side rear brake, front indicator showing a white light and number plate light very dull.
Got those jobs done and have a M.O.T. now.
Thankyou to all you guys who helped me out.
