Hello all. I need assistance. :-[

I'm trying to change an exhaust manifold on my 24v. Its the nearside one (passenger side).

Anyway, the 6 bolts where it fixes to the head come undone nicely.
However, I'm having difficulty with the 4 that attach it to the downpipe. One seems to have shifted, but the second is beginning to round over a bit. I'm scared to push it too much. And number 3 & 4 are solid too.

Any tips or tricks?
Do I stand any chance of getting these undone? :-/

you will have to visit me and paul, and we will see what the magic shed has in the way of spare bolts!

np m8, i guess you tried the usual sprays, id generally try to knock siezed bolts with a hammer and socket, but as its on the cat side of the manifold, DONT do that!

know anybody with an oxy aceletene kit ?,reason why,if you can heat them up this will make them cosiderably easier to remove...

Hi Craig.

Don't really know anyone with that kind of gear.
I was considering heating it myself, but there's not an awful lot of room to mess about in there. Could be a bit of a fire risk :-/

if they break at least you can make repairs with the manifold off, only rear way if they are ad is to heat em up and then bite the bullet.

If they do round off can you gently force (that don't sound right) a smaller socket on that might have more grip? ???

Almost tried that (with the next Imperial size socket down) but thought I should get a better fitting socket of the right size first.

Also, I got quite sidetracked today and its now too dark (and cold) to look at it.

Will give it another try tomorrow.

Paul - get a set of sockets that grip the flats - they are brilliant for this sort of problem!

Hmm... bought a really good 15mm socket to do this job, which still doesn't really fit properly - what a stupid odd size these nuts are!

Have only managed to undo one nut. Thats one of the ones reached from in the engine bay. The other one next to it, I have cut and chisled off (carefully of course).

Now the remaining two are reached from the underside of the car, and they have now both rounded over and require some 'special treatment'. The problem is, its tight to get a hand and a tool up in there.

I imagine these are the ones that the exhaust centre would normally damage or snap.

Anyone else done these, or know what I'm talking about? And if so, any suggestions?? :(

Cheers Russ. There's just about enough room for one of us to get underneath it. But if I do need more muscle, I'll shout.

And I will more than likely be shouting for a new stud and some nuts if you have them.

Done that.
I went and bought one specially to do it. I figured it was worth yet another fiver to get it undone. Shame that slipped too. :(

Cutting and chiselling gets them off, but its just too tight for space.

Paul, I have just read an article in a Trade magazine about Loctiite's Freeze and Release. Aerosol product which according to the tester enabled him to release exhaust nuts and leaf springs without difficulty once they had been 'doused' in the stuff and left to soak while he had a cuppa. I know my local mechanic uses a similar product. Just a thought,may be worth a go.

9/16" & 1/4 whitworth are just smaller than 15mm, use hammer to fit them to the nuts.

Hmm.... I've even done that with the⁹/₁₆but they're f***ed now.
I think the only option is to cut them, somehow.

Well those nuts 'n' bolts all came off in the end. Not quite a textbook manoeuvre me thinks, but still. ::)

Anyway, the old manifold is off and the replacement back on.
The problemt was a crack. Once I got it off the car, I realised how bad it was. It had almost cracked the hole way around. Took some pics to attempt to show you...

Luckily, t'other one seems ok Dave.

Not 100% sure how this crack came about, but if you look at the first pic, you can see a 'ding' right on the line of the crack. That was already there before I was and may have been what weakened it :-/

quite common to find cracks on 24v manifolds
