Title: Rear speaker removal
Post by kskjon on Jan 8th, 2006, 9:58pm
How do I remove the plastic covers on the rear speakers? (saloon)

And do anyone know the size of the original speakers?

Was thinking of replacing them with some audiophile grade speakers.

Edit: I have checked the site, and can't seem to find any information. The only information seems to be on the estate.

And btw. What size are the front speakers?

The speakers are removed as a complete unit (not just the grilles).
They are bolted up through the parcel shelf from inside the boot.

The front speakers are 4" I think.

Ah, okay.

Will "unbolt" one of them and have a look then. Hopefully the grille will be removable.

My plan was to upgrade the speakers, but keep the original look.

i wanted to do this but its a nightmare..i even got the dremmel drill out to have a go..the speaker unit is one piece and like the previous post says just unbolts..then to get the plastic off like you want is a drill job..then some cosmetic work is needed to fit the newer 6x4 back in..if your gonna try it may i suggest 2 things..

1) get one from a scrappy.. sieera or scorpio will do ...then practice on it
2) get a quote from a specialist car audio install gaff.

regards and good luck..post the job on here if you go aghead.

Will do.

Hopefully, I'll have time to take out one of the for a look this weekend (studies and part time job takes a lot of time).

Got the rear speakers out yesterday, and as Paul B and stafford said, the speaker units are one piece, and not very easy to disassemble.

They were, however, very easy to hook up to another amplifier.

Seems like the best option is to use the grilles on the new speakers, maybe having them painted the right color. Haven't decided on what to put in yet, though.

Btw. I found a loose cable (coaxial) underneath the right hand speaker. Looked almost like an antenna cable. Any idea what this is?

Could well be an old antenna cable from a previous phone installation?

There are no factory coax cables in the rear of the scorpio as the ariel is roof mounted at the front

Now that you mention it, it does sound likely.
There's a cell phone antenna base on the rear window, but the antenna itself was removed long before I bought the car.

Ive changed mine, but gave up trying to keep the same look....
I cut a plank and bought filt in the same collor as the shelf.... :-/
If i remember correctly the original speakers are quite shallow...

So replacement speakers must be shallow to, and the "good stuff" always have massive magnets.... :(

True, but I'm not going for massive bass from the speakers. Have a 12" in the boot for that :-)

Hopefully I can find some shallow speakers which does the job.

Currently checking these out:

The first ones _should_ fit, I hope ("Mounting Depth:      1-15/16"").

But hey, it works... :P 12" is a must... only made 120dB thoug, but its enought for me... :)

The first one looks like a replacement for this things... :)
You have a Dremell Multi...?  }{

I have a fake dremel-thingie :-)
Does the job just as good, for half the price  ;D

First one is made to fit a number of different mounting holes, yes. 5cm deep according to google.

With a bit of luck, the second ones(6x8") will fit. Mounting depth of approx 5.7cm according to google.

The smallest 6x9" are 7.7cm deep. Those will surely not fit.

With my luck, the mounting holes are probably 4.5cm deep or something..
