Title: If you have Cossie, READ THIS
Post by leftofcentre on Jan 15th, 2006, 6:32pm
{} This is the reason why i prefer to perform oil changes myself rather than get a garage to do it for £25.  {}

The pic below shows a kinked coolant pipe to/from the oil cooler above the Oil Filter.  :o :o :o :o

It is impossible to see this pipe from above and very difficult without the oil filter removed.

Would a garage have spotted this? And if so, would they have been bothered to bring to one's attention?  :-[
>:(
Is this the reason for my ballooning rad?  :'(

On removal from the engine the pipe showed evidence of being in this state for some time and was impossible to straighten having hardened into this shape!  Hence it was renewed.

It is normally supported by a clamp bolted to the engine block.

Incidently, the oil change removed the tappet noise completely (mentioned in a previous post) and the engine purrs now.  Even my wife commented on the amazing noise difference.  I filled it with Duckhams 5-40 Fully Synthetic. :) :)

Oh and by the way, the A4LDe oil was renewed with success through the Cooler pipes (As mentioned in other post).  Quik fix indeed.  Until i get to Glasgow to have it done properly anyway.   :D

Great news that - I remember the difference an oil change made to my 24v - the previous owner had it last done 12000 miles before! Sounded like a different car  :D

How does the 'box feel? I had the oil/filter done on it about 3k ago but would like to change the oil again really, maybe by that method.....

Hi Dave, Box is much smoother.  My wife has noticed this more as she drives it mostly.  She says it seems to change gear 10mph less than it used to although this is prob due to a recently changed MAF.

She is amazed at the transformation.  Hardly any rattle, no tappet "diesel engine" noise, no clunky gearbox.

An absolute success really.

If you do change the gearbox oil via the cooler pipes, i found the engine needed to be at idle to pump out the old oil.  I did this in intervals of adding 1litre of oil, start engine, wait till flow reduces to dribble, repeat etc.

I found the oil simply wouldnt "drain" out as if you look, the pipes, when entering the gearbox are actually quite high above the sump.

Autobox Oil changed within an hour doing it this way.  :D :D :D
