Title: Engine Additive as a cleaner
Post by DJWerkz on Jan 26th, 2006, 1:17am
I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on whether there are any 'genuine' engine additives out there that will clean hydraulic valves if they are a little noisy and other engine components?

As my engine has been standing for some time I plan on doing the first oil change fairly quickly and was thinking it would be good to put an additive in before I do the change.

By the way, I'm using the expensive GM 5w-30 engine oil as my brother-in-law gets this cheap from Vauxhall's.

Ask your brother-in-law if his dealership is using Forte fuel treatment (some are) and get him to get you a bottle, this is supposedly good stuff for cleaning the system out, including valves. Forte even put a guarantee on it against MOT emissions failure (subject to terms and conditions of course). I've used it with no complaints.

Hi
Dont use any additives with synthetic oil just change oil and filter after 300 miles. You will find the oil will clean out any deposits left in the engine.
Good idea to check the old oil when you drain it into the nice clean plastic bowl.
If you find large amounts of carbon grit. do the same again after 300 miles..
After all the price of the oil is not an issue..

Whoops  :-[

Didn't read your post properly I was talking about the wrong valves, still it is good stuff.

As for the hydraulic valves I flushed out the engine on the last change with a can of engine flush and a bottle of clean oil for 15 minutes at "high-ish" revs before draining and refilling the engine with Castrol Magnatec 10W40 and a new filter. Taking into account though I've only done 81K with regular servicing and oil changes every 3K I wouldn't recommend particulary flushing on high mileage vehicles and this is something you don't do every oil change.  @

Hi
Foregot to mention that I used to build race engines a few years ago such as Ford BDA, BDG. Chevy 327, 350, 454 cu/ins.
I worked in the oilfield for many years on Caterpillar D399 V16, EMD V16, Detroit V12, and Cummins Diesel engines.
Oil change on a EMD V16 around 300 gallons and 36 filters..
I never used any additives or flushing oil even after a engine failure and rebuild.
I always used top quality oil every time..

recomend the forte additives, best I've used, def the dogs & the only additive cure I have found for noisy hydraulic tappets, even with high quality oils you can get a varnish build up in the followers & oil ways to them, dont put clean oil in a dirty engine.

I used AMSOIL engine flush - who recommend that you fit new filter proir to using for max effect- cannot drive car with it in - just fast idle for 20mins then empty.
Only use it when I don't know history otherwise 3 -4000 mile oil & filter changes should prevent any problems occuring in 1st place

p.s anyone got Forte web site address out of interest

How much is the hydraulic valve additive Martin?  How many would I need for the 24v engine?

Similar price, never used that one though, good flush then good oil, but it wouldnt hurt, all their products are top notch, used em for years, does exactly what it says on the tin.
