Title: interior mirror fixing
Post by bhimself on Mar 10th, 2006, 4:36pm
I know this might sound a simple solution.  But Im planing to fit a new (electric type) interior mirror to my Scorp.  They normally glue on, but Ive had loads of problems getting the right kind of glue to stick it up.  Most glues tend to react to the constant temperature changes and vibratations and end up falling off sooner or later.  What substance to the factory use? it looks like some kind of rubber sealant that is probably quite flexible.  Id be really glad for any advice.  I dont want it to drop considering how much the replacement cost me.

Try your local windscreen replacement centre ie :Autoglass or similar. They must have the proper gear and would probably just give you a drop if approached in the right way.

My local autoglass-specialist did my mirror for about £5, work and glue included. Took about 5 minutes.

Thanks for all your help.  The mirror is now fixed to the windscreen firmly... but I discovered that the old mirror actually slides off a bracket (no need for glue like normal mirrors) and the new slides on again!!! Very easy to fit!!!  Thanks Ford for that..

Halfords do a replacement mirror glue kit consisting of glue and matting (which you cut to size). costs £4.95 and sticks solid in about 3 minutes. So far it has lasted 4 months on my motor.

Greetings all,
This is something I wanted to ask about last year but couldn't remember my password! Anyway seems what I did in the end was not very different from the above - my mirror is the simple basic type (not self dimming), but of course when trying to adjust it one day (the ball joint has got extremely stiff!) it "came off in me 'and, mum!" Eventually I glued it back on with Evostik. This didn't seem very promising at first but of course one must put a reasonable coat on both surfaces first then let them go tacky. A couple of bits of gaffa tape round the edge to hold the base onto the glass initially while it cures. Anyway that was about six months ago and so far it's still hanging on. If it comes off again I think I might treat it to a new one
