Title: What's this connector for?
Post by Pegasus on Mar 25th, 2006, 9:11pm
Hi,
Just found this sitting under the crossmember.

http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0awD5AqMiTc!B*jXy*4MQGKUU1qRt0t48R59i2zVUFla4n1Jbv1d45Tt3HIoA3Bf2Aew4OR0GnwsHCv6V04bkdePrz1hIF99q5Bllq42hN3gKhbSiUts47Lmgpz8bHCsLp2181L2QUQRpudF9GkeAHB*dtNT1SKy1/ConnectorUnderCrossmember2-resize.jpg?dc=4675565658712293467

Anyone have a similar thing and what is it normally connected to?

Cheers

Paul

Paul. Could it be for headlamp washers unless you have them. I'm sure I have the odd 'spare'connector on mine. Would the colour code of the wires tell you by reference to the wiring diagram?. Mike.

Paul...  I've got 2 of those on mine. One each side of the crossmember.
I think quite a few others have them as well, but no-one's ever worked out what the 'spare' connectors could be on a top spec car that already has everything  :-/

Paul - what ever it is for,  it looks a bit grubby for your car ;)  ;D

Paul, the wiring diagram for headlamp washers seems to show the connections as having a black/yellow wire. Any help or do you have them fitted?.

The headlamp washers are not electric. They use the force of water pressure generated by the big pump sat in the washer bottle. There are only water pipes going to the jets!

Thank you Baz. Just re-checked the diagram and the text refers to the 'Pump' which is obviously the unit in the bottle not the actual jet mechanism. We live and learn!.

my car is a dec 98 24v ultima and has none of these connectors at the front valance. it does have a diagnostic port with a red plug in though.(my garage man says its probably a port for testing the climate or air con.the red port that is)

Apparently, and I don't know if this refers to the plug pictured, but some (all?) Fords have 2 plugs that you can connect to make the cooling fan run all the time. This is for carrying out work on the engine when it needs to be running for long periods without moving.

Sorry Dave(n), I'll try to do better  ;)

Thanks All for replies. Dave's info on the fans sounds promising

Does make you wonder why a plug is left un-protected from the elements ???

Mines got one of these as well.

Anybody any clearer about what this connector does?

hi there

is this not the plug for the fully automatic climate control. :-/

Sorry mine had them as well and often wondered  ???, I thought they may have been for headlamp wipers but then remembered there has never been any but I might have been wrong.  :P

JohnJ I prefer your first thought.

Perhaps for the Anti Radar/Gatso Missiles or for powering the rotisserie on the optional barbeque. Barry, what do you think? And if it is really not being used, what can we do with them?

Got that already :)

hi there

are you sure? :-/
never heard of someone with it. will be a first. most of the ultima's have semi automatic climate control. the fully automatic control reacts to pollution etc, switching on the recirc to keep it out of the car etc. can't seem to find where i read about, though. :(

And engages recirc when you select reverse gear so that you do not suck in your exhaust fumes as you reverse over them. Or was that the Seat Ibiza ;D

WOuld it be an after thought, some Scorpio came with reversing radar, maybe they where thinking of putting the same on the front.

Yesterday I would have wished it was for Front Mounted machine Guns, to eliminate the moronic clown who carved me up  here in Torquay!!

Now THERE'S a thought!!

Ebay here I come!! ;) ;)

Well it's got a ground wire and they're thicker than wires used for sensors so I assume it powers a small motor or a solenoid of some description.  Also it seems to be in a separate loom which runs back through the bulkhead on the driver's side (most of the engine electrics go through the passenger side).  It could be for special applications such as police (blue light maybe?), but I really don't know.

So who is going to be brave and connect a meter to it to see if it's live? :) ;)

Well putting a meter on it set to Volt DC should not do any harm as you are not creating any resistance accross anything but what would it proove if you did find 12v on it.
As for being for something for the Police I doubt it as that would proove un-economical as such few cars was used for the police.
I'm at a loss what they are for.

I'll stick a meter across it when I get chance -  there's a couple of other connectors I'd like to identify too (unless anyone knows what they do already); one is a small two pin connector near the ABS modulator - I assume it would connect to washer fluid sensor if I had one.  The other is above the radiator and is a square four pin connector with a red plastic cap fitted to keep it clean.

Anybody know?

The one with the red plastic cap is AFAIK what was part of the older type of diagnostics for the car. it enabled the mechanics to plug service tools in and operate the starter and things . Not really delved into it . there may well be a three pin one on the nearside innner wing as well.

True - but tracing it back to a circuit could be tricky - only way I know would be to pull fuses or relays and switching each aux circuit on and off! Knowing the voltage and amps would be useful I guess!

If I had the odd spare day...... ;)

Thought it was obvious, in some countries a reflective  front  number plate is not enough,  it must be illuminated.

Is there a prize for the correct answer ? :-*

'fraid not Floppy.  I metered my connector tonight and no matter what circuit I tried it didn't go live at all.  Mind you, my car is more or less base spec so there's a lot it doesn't have.

Had a look at the wiring diagrams and I'm wondering if it could be the compressor motor for self-levelling suspension?  Yes, I know the estates had self levelling rear dampers but they weren't electrically operated.  However the Granadas had a small compressor mounted behind the front bumper which fed air to the rear dampers.  The wire colours are correct, however the diagram shows the compressor having a four-way connector - the remaining two wires operate a relief solenoid to dump system pressure - unless Ford moved this solenoid elsewhere on the Scorpios.  Wonder if Ford ever offered this electrical system on the first Scorpios; would explain why it was deleted from the later models.

In a software with car parts on the scorpio there is an air compressor for the rear susspension
