Title: Limited Slip Diff
Post by mazzy_j on Mar 29th, 2006, 12:15pm
Just read on another post that some Scorpio's were fitted with a Limited Slip Diff, but how do you tell whether its fitted or not?

On me cossie if i boot it from standstill with the traction control off the back scrabbles around for grip but it doesn't actually 'light up' the tyres which got me wondering.

try doing dounuts with it  ;D. if the back end goes round and the front end stays on the same spot odds on you have a lsd fitted ;D

I was always told that the best way to check is with rear wheels raised. You turn one wheel by hand, if the other wheel turns in the same direction its a LSD if it turns in the opposite direction its not a LSD.

almost correct, just depends on type / pre load on the lsd, & is possable to do dounuts without one, for road use a diff would be too noisy with any amount of pre load, mind you i think the ferguson type are free off load anyway.

Would an LSD have any special markings on it or letters on the VIN plate?

I believe that LSD would only have been offered on early models until TCS came along.  In any case, TCS wouldn't have worked on the early diesels because the ECU does not control injection quantity.

The Ford parts software tells you if a car has the LSD by imputting the VIN number or original reg number.

The only place that if a Scorpio was ever fitted with a LSD would be a place they have lots of snow & ice:)

I asked him to send the vin number of the car this was fitted to and according to the Ford software, it wasn't fitted with an LSD.

Be careful if you bid

I bet it is not a LSD or it's from a MK3 Granada.

Just because the 24V Granada was LSD people thing the later Scorp is too.

The Mk3 uses 100mm shafts & the later Scorp 108mm.
Can't be certain but from the pic they look like 100mm shafts so I reckon it's a MK 3 one ;D
But there again it's probably a open ultima diff just like all the other early ones.
