Title: Trailer Lighting socket. Post by Spannerdemon on Apr 13th, 2006, 12:50pm This is to help anyone who may be fitting TOWBAR ELECTRICS. I know that there is a very good illustrated guide to the actual towbar fitting: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/towbar.htm When it came to wiring the electrics, however, I was struggling to find the information that I needed as to which wires from the socket, connected to which wires on the car. This is relevant to my own car, (a 1996 2.9 12v Ultima Saloon), but I suspect that the lighting wiring will be the same for most Scorpios. YOU have to check this!! If you are not comfortable with using simple wiring tools, and scotchlock connectors etc, then let a professional auto electrician do it for you. So here, after testing with my faithful test set, are the connections that you need to connect to to fit a basic socket on your towbar to pull a small trailer. @If you are fitting caravan sockets, then you need more information than I can help you with. @ This is for a SIMPLE UNBRAKED TRAILER WITHOUT FOG LIGHTS. Fitting: I bought a ready made, wired, connected socket and bracket which simply bolted to the towbar behind the ball. I then ran the cable through the right hand corner of the boot (looking at the boot from the back of the car) through the existing grommet which is just under the bumper. I then used cable ties to secure the cable out of the way under the car. I then removed the protective strip (4 screws) which covers the boot release catch and sensor). If you do this, you can see where all the wires go, and join onto them with Scotchlocks at a convenient point. Sockets in the trailer plug to the loom are: Pin 1 Yellow Wire LH Indicator To Blue Wire in Left hand light cluster Pin 2 Blue Wire Fog Light Not Used Pin 3 White Wire Earth To Car Body. I used a simple wiring eyelet. Pin 4 Green Wire RH Indicator Blue/Red Wire in RH Cluster Pin 5 Brown Wire RH Tail Light Orange Wire in RH Cluster Pin 6 Red Wire Stop/Brake Purple Wire Pin 7 Black Wire LH Tail Light Orange/ White in LH cluster Where two colour wires are shown, the First colour is the main colour of the cable, and the second colour is the 'trace' or thin inserted secondary colour. IMPORTANT NOTE:: The BLACK wire from the trailer socket does NOT connect to Earth. The earth wire is coloured White. The black wire goes to the LH Tail Light. Strange, but that's how it is!! Anyway. there you have it. Hope it helps someone out there. Have fun!! ;D |
