Title: More on tyre selection
Post by Magnusf on Apr 17th, 2006, 3:49pm
I'm going to pick up a 1996 24v Ghia Estate with Ultima alloys. It's currently got 225/50 16 Hankook Ventus with 5 mm thread left. I prefer slightly narrower tyres (performe better in wet and on roads that have deep "tracks" from all lorry traffic, less noicy and slightly better fuel economy) and in perticular Michelin, so I'm concidering selling the 225's while they're still useable and get some brand new Primacy 205/55 16's instead. Is that a good idea? What do you people think?

hi there

size wise it's an ok swap, but i don't know if you would feel/see much difference. 205 is still a big tyre!

i'd run with what it has until they were done, then decide.

btw, don't see a pressure rating for 205x55x16 in the handbook, so don't think it's a ford recommended size. :-/ http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/handbook146.gif

I have 215/55 16's on mine and that's the tyre size supposed to be fitted, according to my VIN when entered on the Ford computer - Weird.

hi there

205's are a closer match than 215's. try using the size guide from http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/alloyoptions.htm

as i said earlier, 205, 215 or 225 tyres are still big tyres compred to the original 195x65x15's.

Cheers for the imput guys!

I suppose 205's is standard fitment for 15" whie 225 is standard fitment for the 16" wheels. That's why 205's on 16" isn't mentioned in the tyre pressure guide?

Total wheel diameter should stay roughly the same and 205/55 16" is standard on many newer cars (Mondeo 2001 for example) so they will be in stock and resonably priced.

So, if I get it right, it's a quite possible combination, wich won't disturb the qualitys of the chassi, but then again the gain against existing tyres won't be that dramatic either?
