Title: Fan or pump behind wiper linkage?
Post by Kjetil S on Apr 30th, 2006, 4:24pm
Hello,

I've noticed a fan or pump (most likely the latter) starting whenever I turn on the ignition, and the engine bay is warm (either left the engine running for a while, or the sun has been shining on the bonnet). Haven't been able to pin point it's location, but it sounds like it's a part of the heater or to the right of it when looking from the front. (It's a LHD car) Any idea what this might be? I don't have a/c or c/c, just a plain heater, and it doesn't matter if it's on or off.

The fuel PUMP primes the fuel system up to pressure when the ignition is fisrt turned on. IS IT that you hear?

Otherwise no idea what it could be .

Isn't the fuel pump located near the fuel tank somewhere? Think it was on my granny atleast. But no, it's not the fuel pump. I can hear that buzzing for a second or so before it stops.

I'm guessing this thing has something to do with cooling, based on the fact that it's temperature related (either that or a temperature dependant short circuit or something), but haven't got a clue what exactly it might be.

does your car have the air temp sensor for the heater controlls?

mine does and i have the same, there is a little fan inside the controll unit for the air temp sensor, maybe it's that?

How do I know if I have an air temp sensor?
It could be that. Sounds like it comes from somewhere near the heater, but it's difficult to pin point.

I have now found out what it was. It seems like the fan(s) in the heater starts automatically when the engine bay is warm. It doesn't matter if the heater is turned off or not. Only thing that helps is pulling the fuse (29). Is it normal for the fan(s) to start automatically (with fan control set to "0"? If I set the control to "1" or more, it does speed up accordingly, so everything _seems_ normal there, but I thought "0" would mean "off"?

hi there

on the sierra, you had to turn the fan speed and the the air direction to off to get the fan to stop.

hope that makes sense. ;D

Don't think the air direction knob has an "off" setting. Panel looks like this (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/handbook050.gif). Wonder if the fan is used to cool components in the dashboard or something like that? That could explain why it turns on when the car is warm.
