Title: Poor tickover
Post by caterex on May 2nd, 2006, 2:16pm
Hi all
24v problems
Having completed 3000mls since chains and adjusters replacement I now have a problem with a very lumpy tickover as if the timing is out, just ready to cut out.A very rich mixture is indicated as well as a very black exhaust pipe.
Above 1500 rpm the car performs perfectly,no gearbox  problems, changes up and down with out any hesitation. I have noticed the rev counter gets quite erratic after a short time running.
I have cleaned the IAC valve, and MAF, checked for leaks around the EGR system.
My other 24v is running and ticking over perfectly, so I can swop over bits to find out what or where the problem is,
as I do not want to end up two rough running cars,I would like some guidance to where to start and what to swap.
All help wil be greatfully appricated.

Try swapping the MAF, or disconnecting it to see if theres a difference on tickover, it might be broken

Erratic rev counter would suggest a problem with the crank sensor or it's wiring - this is also used for ignition timing amongst other things.

Swapped the MAF, no difference, dissconnected the MAF very slight change in rpm.
Swopped the following,TP sensor,IAC valve,VRIS,I will next look at crank sensor, but any problem there I am sure  would show it self in other areas, the car runs perfectly above 1500rpm, I have recently returned from Devon and maintained very high crusing speeds non stop for 1.5 hrs no problems what so ever, it is only on tick over the problem occurs.!!
Is there a way to shut off the EGR valve to see does that make a difference.
Thanks
Fred

EGR valve is vacuum operated (at least it is on the diesels) - just pull the vacuum pipe off and plug it!

It's vacuum operated on the petrol versions too. Someone else will most likely have more in depth information about it.
