Title: Battery Advice - UPDATED!
Post by DJWerkz on May 5th, 2006, 12:37pm
I went to Costco's today to check out what battery's they have for the Scorpio, here's what I found:

Bosch Silver 5CN
55Ah 540A
Part Number: 555 156 054

On the battery label it reads that this battery is suitable for the Scorpio, Transit, Mondeo etc.

What do the experts think?

I need a good battery for my 24v that's not going to fail or run flat just because I don't use the car over the weekend.

Read this http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/battery.htm. The one vital thing is to have enough power for these cars and the advice has allways been to go for a high capacity unit.

hi there

as mike has stated, big is best in this case. my battery is a smaller one ( i know  :-[), and all winter i've been getting the flicking neddles! now, i know my battery is fine, but it shows how much power these cars take to start from winter cold. :o

go for the bigger one. that being said, didn't someone post about the batteries changing size or something? :-/

I went for one which was rated at 71cca (cold cranking amps), the guy said that I was lucky to get one due to them being phased out, and in future would have to go with a smaller, less powerful battery

Last year I purchased a Varta E10 battery 72ah 680 with a three year guarantee from my local motor factors and paid £60 including the VAT. In stock,on the shelf !!. I'll check in the morning to see if its still in  production.    UPDATE:- Just been to the factors and it is still in the Varta list. They do list a smaller one BUT this is shown as an alternative.

I got a new battery last week, a romanian brand one but it has 75 Ah and 720 A for cold cranking, now it starts at-a-flick-of a key  ;D

Cheers mate,     75 Ah and 720A,   I'll make a note of that,    worth  remembering when the time   comes   for  battery   replacement,   as it surely will  ::)

I went to my local motor factors this morning and the only battery they show around this rating is a Varta and it's 70Ah 640CC.

The service guy said that the battery for the Scorpio shows it should be 175mm high whereas the Varta one is 190mm.

Any further comments/clarification on this particular battery?

Oh yes, the price,..I was quoted £103!  :-/

Try  www.varta.co.uk. You can see all the details you are ever going to want about capacity, size etc. I was told the particular battery is used for the Ford transit and diesels so it has more power.

I was thinking earlier whether we would get more battery options if the pos + neg leads were re-terminated with round terminal connectors?

Anyone else on here changed the lead terminations over?

Afterall, the new Ford battery's have round terminals.

That won't be a problem. My Scorp came with round connectors (previous owner did this). You can probably get suitable connectors for the cables on Halfords or something. (Not that I've ever actually been to Halfords)

Got the new round terminal connectors today from the Motor Factors.  I also asked them to check what options in the Varta range would be available if I did have round terminals.

The guy said that there is much more variety of battery options if you have round terminals but found a Varta battery they use for diesel Escorts.  It's a 72Ah 700cc unit.

Just need to check dimensions to see if the height is OK.

Price is cheaper too, £66!!

Dimensions of the Varta battery I've been looking at are 277 long x 175 wide x 190 high

Does anyone know if 190mm height will be too tall to get the strap on and the battery cover?

I had round terminals from when i bought the car, and they seemd to be stock  :o. As for the battery height i have a "custom" battery strap.

This is the site
http://www.rombatt.ro/

type is Tornado 75Ah / 720 A cc current
Length x Width x Height 277 x 175 x 190 mm

in my case it fits like a glove

Round terminals

Hello

As i was saying earlyer it's a romanian brand. I don't know if they export them.

This is their e-mail: rombat@rombatt.ro

It was about 50 Euro (including VAT)  or ~ 36 GBP (also including VAT)

My brother-in-law got back to me with regard to the GM high-power battery.  They do one that will fit in the Scorpio tray which is a 90Ah and the high 600's cold cranking I believe.

That should be a lovely fit ;)

Price is cheaper than anything referenced on this thread for other battery makes but that's because he is ex-Vauxhall motors and has lifetime trade discount.

That should be enought for our little scorps  ;D

What a fiasco this has turned out to be!

Finally managed to get over to Vauxhall parts with my brother-in-law in Luton, the first parts facility we went to knew nothing about the battery he had been previosuly quoted on and told him to go to the parts counter that quoted him for the 90Ah battery.

When we got there they could not find any reason why he was told a 90Ah battery was available!!!

They checked their book and said that they do a direct replacement (with round terminals) for the Scorpio battery and this is rated at:

66Ah
CCA DIN 380
CCA 700
RC 110

They said they had one in stock but when they check they didn't.  Have to go back this morning to collect it.

Hope this is going to be adequate   :-/

...it was cheap approx £38.
