Title: Audio Wiring
Post by DJWerkz on May 9th, 2006, 1:27pm
I have checked the Scorpio 'How To' pages but I can't quite seem to understand the write up on how the stereo system is configured.

My car has the external amplifier behind the glove box and while I have the dash assembly out I would like to by-pass this altogether so that my after-market head unit is connected directly to the speakers.

On the Ford external amp there is a black multi-plug but this contains more cables than just the speaker.  If this is disconnected will it affect any of the power circuit to the head unit?

I suppose in short, what grey ribbon cables can I do away with altogether?

Hi DJ,

I had this problem when doing the 2007 to 7000 upgrade see here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/radioupgrade.htm)

You can bypass the amp like I did by making up a cable which does away with the grey ribbon cable - the power is supplied separately.

The only problem would be if you wanted to use the CD changer as that is spliced into the grey ribbon cable I believe!

The pinouts on the above page should help you connect the speakers directly as well

Superb!  I have all the dash stripped out at the moment so I think I will make up a new harness to splice into this amp connector.

I am sure that even though I am using a special cable that allows me to run a self-powered head-unit in the existing Ford amplifier circuit, there is an electrical mis-match between the new head unit and the Ford amp as you have to drive the head unit quite hard to get any suitable volume level out of it

Hopefully bypassing the Ford amp will be worthwhile.

I am also going to add in a new harness for connecting up an iPod.  I am using a FM modulator that I got from the USA and having tried it out already it seems to be of very high quality.  The smaller money tray/compartment on the drivers side of the lower dash will become the storage area for the modulator.
