Post by bizzay1 on May 18th, 2006, 4:39pm
well, I have been back on the road for over a week now and I am thinking of having the gearbox oil and filter changed, any advice as to the type to use, is Dexron II the correct one ??

Dextron II was superseeded by Dextron III a number of years ago and if you find any it will be very old stock. There is very little choice in the market on Auto fluids. Mitsubishi produce a much higher spec ATF called SP II/III but its expensive and hard to find. The final choice is Amsoil ATF which is a sill higher spec and is a full synthetic. It can take higher temperatures gives smoother changes and lasts many times longer. Cheaper than Mitsubishis own but more expensive than a Dextron III.  All depends on how much abuse you put through your box, how long you think you will keep your car, and how often you are prepared to change the fluid. But remember to change the filter too. Rule of thumb is red oil is OK, brown oil is burned / contaninated and needs changing, black oil is a major problem!

Halfords sell autobox/PAS oil to the Ford spec (its even labelled as Ford spec oil) I think its about £6/litre but not sure if they sell it in larger volumes.

Thanks for the advice amsoil, I have found a web site that sells your oil in GB but it works out to just over £100 for enough to fill a scorp box - (now the sting)

Going by your name you are associated with the company - is there any chance of some discount for us & can we buy it direct from you???

I would be pleased to offer club members a 10% discount but will have to square this with Admin/ moderators prior to issuing a discount code.  I only visited the culgs site because I had been told about it By a customer who is a club member.

what a difference the oil change has made  :D after I got it back from the hg being done the gear selection seemed very tight, I thought they had bent the mechanism somehow and the oil looked as if it had been overheated (that's why I decided to change it) but now it is as smooth as when I first got in the car.
