Realised today, as we had some lovely sunshine for once, that my AC system was completely emptied of gas etc. when we did the engine replacement.

What I am looking for is a good ac engineer in the Milton Keynes, Northampton, Luton or Bedford area that can do a compete system re-gas.

Anyone used someone is these areas before?

Pity really, mate of mine is Service Manager for a refrigerant company, he could have done it for free but he's just relocated to the South coast :-/

Sorry for hi-jack, but has anyone tried the diy top up you can get from Halfords, etc.???

Didn't realise Halfords did the DIY kit, I used to top my own system up when I lived in the USA as it was legal to do it there. I thought it was something only a certified engineer could do here,...if Halfords are selling a kit though it must be OK?!

I still have my ac pressure test gauge too, hopefully all the connections are the same.

As my ac system is now empty is there a more environmental friendly refrigerant I need to use?

About 10 miles from me, £65 +VAT for a full system gas. How does that sound people?

sounds about right to me craig...
guy i use in taunton charges £99.00 for a full service and re-gas of the air con...
would it possibly pay to get the air con serviced as well as re-gased :-/..

My bloke does the lot for £50 dead. High Wycombe though, so a bit of a treck (45 mins) perhaps not saving that much after fuel. www.acornmotors.co.uk

He will de-gas, re-gas & oil, dye/sniffer, and final check for that price. Nice bit of kit he uses as well.

I dont actualy have any exp with these things, but:

What amazes me is that 134a gas is actualy quite cheap and a very easy gas to control as it has a low expansion rate under pressure. (ie, does not put a lot of stress on seals, think cheap lighter gas) But AC systems are quite complex and need good balence to function. Kits like this are really bad but can be good at the same time. Pitty you need to shell out £40 either way to find out. When all that has is about £9 worth of actaual 134a in it and if you have a leak and loose the gas after a few days, you have no comeback. OK if you know your system is 100% I suppose.

I need my saloon doing while this subject is ongoing. Anybody recommend a place in the North west - yes we do sometimes need it oop 'ere in't cold bit of the country.

STUPID ME! :-[

How could I forget about Kempston Radiators!!! They not only supplied me with the correct radiator and heater matrix but also do air conditioning systems.

Ran down there today and got a full system re-gas for £47.

System checked out OK and got to run all the way home with nice ice cold air.

Sorted!

Now it's just a matter of getting hold of STN and getting him to check my car over, in particular the EGR system.

Hi all.
I had my air con re-gassed professionally last January.. it blew cold but flicked off a lot, and since then it has stopped blowing cold altogether. The car did spend a few months off the road in that time, so we think the gas evaporated then.

I don't have a lot of money and 90% of my experiences with mechanics and professionals have been really sour, so! We did the halfords thing.

I'll give the summary before the detail. It's worked quite well.
Considering my air con wasn't working at all before today, the kit has done an excellent job. It's not freezing, but it's cold.. and the main thing is that it's very consistant, hasn't been flicking off as it did after last year's re-gas.

Whether or not it'll damage the internals as John suspects, I don't know.. but I think I've done the right thing. In addition to this.. subsequent regasses using the same kit will only cost an additional £20, as I now have the guaged tubing supplied with the big kit (see Bizzay's link).

I'd be interested to hear about other people's experience with the kit, it's fairly inevitable that some people will regret buying it, so don't take my advice for definate. But I can confirm it's worked on mine!

Had mine re-gassed a couple of weeks ago at the local village garage for £49 + VAT and it's working better than it has in the 3 years i've owned the car! Best £57 i've spent in a while!!

Had my scorp 3 years now without having the air con re gassed. I noticed in the hot weather it was not cooling very well so I purchased a top up kit from my local motor factor. 5 Mins work and air con runs ice cold again. Now i have the trigger and guage will only have to buy a can of gas next time for about £17. System has run ice cold for a week now. The gas can also contains compressor oil and a leak sealer mixed with the gas. I will post any problems I find on this site.
