Title: Electrical gremlins
Post by AdamS on Jun 13th, 2006, 2:25pm
Afternoon all!
First post for me here after a while spent lurking, as my '98 2.3 GhiaX Auto has been a paragon of reliability for the 3 years i've owned it!

However...............just had to have a new starter motor and am getting a few strange things happening now when i start the engine - basically the speedo and rev counter do a litle dance round their dials, the trip mileometer, average fuel consumption and average speed readings reset themselves, and the trip computer sets itself to strange metric units, instead of proper imperial ones!

I've tried ignoring it, but it's annoying me, and before i listen to my Ford dealer tell me how i need a new "xxxxxx Module" which will cost me £800, do any fellow owners have any thoughts?

Any advice much appreciated and thanks in advance!

Probably the battery.. If you're only doing short trips, then try charging it overnight. If you do longer runs regulary, then you can probably start looking for a new battery.  :)

Don't remember exactly how long a run is needed to recharge the battery, but a 5-10 minute run to and from work is not sufficient.

There have been a few posts about this problem recently (flicking dials & fuel comp resetting when starting).
The culprit usually turned out to be the battery.

Also check any earth straps that may have been removed and refitted when changing the starter motor.

Dave has a very good point in view of the recent work to the starter motor.  IF you need a new battery read this page and be sure to follow the advice re capacity etc.  http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/battery.htm.

Thanks for the advice all  - it seems to have stopped doing it now and is behaving, but i'll point the finger of blame at the battery if it happens again!
