Title: Sticking Accelerator pedal
Post by jonpic46 on Jun 24th, 2006, 7:54pm
Hi eeveryone
I have this problem with my 'Ultima' 16v 2ltr 1997. The pedal sticks and then I have to put extra pressure on it, with the result that, if I am not careful, The car surges forward. I would be extremely grateful for any advice.

many thanks JONNO

Sounds like the inner cable has become corroded, Either get a new one or remove it from the throttle body end, pull straight and with it raised gently spray WD40 down the end, This is a long slow process but if this is the problem then it will eventually become free, If you can get it off the pedal end then this may be better as you'll have brown muck dripping out of the end :D

Yeah, mine does that too,     blooming   annoying  when  you   accidentally  start off  from  the traffic   lights  like    General   Lee  from   The  Dukes Of Hazard

Strangely   it  doesn't   stick   when the    engine  is  off,   leading  me  to think  that  engine  vacuum    has  a    lot   to   do    with  it.

Also worth cleaning the butterfly valves in the throttle housing - they get a bit sticky, tends to be worse when you first start the car!

Just a wild guess here, but can your problem be something sticking on the throttle body? (Something expanding when hot, and therefore more likely to be sticking?
Or perhaps some point on the cable itself running near the exhaust manifold?

As I said, just a wild guess, but I thought it was worth mentioning  :)

I would sertainly try greasing the cable at the butterfly on the engine. Work it in with the engine of by moving the butterfly. Thie problem happened to me also but with a dolop of grease worked in 1 year later its still great. <FINGERS CROSSED> ;)

If you can get the cable out, and it's not binding inside (which will suggest that the inner cable is damaged), use an old motorcyclists trick. Get some kiddies plasticine from a stationers, and make a funnel at one end of the cable, doesn't matter which end.
Hang the cable up, with an old newspaper under it, and pour some oil into the funnel at the top.
During the night it will run right through the cable, lubricating it on its way.
It's an old way of doing it, but very effective.  ;)
