Title: Rear Wheel Bearing Post by mr._floppy on Jul 16th, 2006, 6:17pm I'm going to have a crack at replacement of N/S rear wheel bearing, a few questions: What size is the big nut ? Is it a clockwise untighten or just normal ? Will I need a puller to remove old bearing from carrier ? Will I need a press to install new one ? Ta. |

Title: Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Post by jonnycab on Jul 16th, 2006, 6:33pm I can't remember the size of the hub nut, but I remember the N/S undoes clockwise. The bearings are packed on pretty tight so a puller to remove them & a press to put them back on would be a good idea. But if you have plenty of time on your hands you could put the whole hub (with bearings) & the new bearings in the freezer overnight. By the morning they should have contracted enough to be able to tap the old bearings off & to tap the new bearings on. :) |

Title: Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Post by jonnycab on Jul 16th, 2006, 11:00pm Just remember, when you put it all back together the hub nut has to tighter than tight, i.e. large breaker bar & a scaffold pole ;D |

Title: Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Post by Simmo on Jul 17th, 2006, 6:29am I think you could both be right !. When I changed mine the one fitted was 32mm but the replacement is 41mm. The best advice is (a) use a proper 'wind back'tool to retract the piston. It does NOT just push back. (b) Be sure to fully tighten the nut as said AND then check it again after a couple of hundred miles. The torque setting is 200ft/lbs and this is way beyond the average DIY torque wrench. This thread may assist.http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1145217961;start=7#7 |

Title: Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Post by Snoopy on Jul 17th, 2006, 8:41am The NEARSIDE rear Wheel bearing loosens ANTICLOCKWISE. the hub nuts on the rear wheel bearing on the scorpio are NOT left and right handed... On the nearside the nut always has a tendancy to undo which is why the use of STRONG thread lock is recommended and 200 ft/lb torque. recheck after a few miles. And the nut size is 32mm |

Title: Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Post by mr._floppy on Jul 17th, 2006, 9:53am Thanks for all the info. Since the hot weather started I've noticed a speed related squeak from the N/S rear end and although the raised wheel is rock solid and free to turn I'm suspecting the infamous rear bearings . I'm eliminating the O/S one coz it was replaced a few months ago. They are the original fitments, so at 89K I suppose they are due for replacement. So apart from the propshaft bearing or UJ's ( unlikely ) it's the only culprit to blame for the squeak. I've ordered the bits, the only problem is I ain't got a big socket or a long enough socket bar extension. :'( |

Title: Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Post by mr._floppy on Jul 18th, 2006, 2:48pm :( I've had to admit defeat. After 3 hours in the blazing sun I couldn't get the bearing cage or the hub carrier off. Firstly I mangled the bottom 2 bearing cage securing bolts ( I must've been using a worn 13mm socket ) Then, I thought I might be able to just replace the hub carrier, so, after spending a tenner on a hub puller, I couldn't even get that off. :-/ I have to say though, even if I had succeeded in getting the cage off , I doubt that I would have got that hub off, it was sure stuck on real tight. :'( So, like Shackleton, better to turn back and and live , than to go on and die ( summat like that anyway ) I put it all back together again and if the noise gets any worse I'll get a professional to do it. ( although he won't thank me for the mangled bolts ) :-* Now I think I deserve a long cool Lager ::) |

Title: Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Post by mazzy_j on Jul 18th, 2006, 3:06pm Did you drown it all in WD40? When i did mine i jacked it up and drowned all the bolts in WD, re-applying every couple of hours. I did this the day before i actually replaced them (seeing as the car wasn't going anywhere). Still managed to mangle a couple of the carrier bolts and had to hacksaw off 1 of the calliper bolts and then knock the thread round with a cold chisel. To prevent further mangling i used a half inch socket, worked a treat. And a gentle tap from a 'persuader' loosened up the hub and freeing it from the splines :) Matt |

Title: Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Post by howiedintheplace on Jul 18th, 2006, 4:17pm You should get a spanner on them bolts & tap them with a hammer to loosen them off. Most times you don't even need WD40. |

Title: Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Post by jonnycab on Jul 19th, 2006, 2:06am Quality sockets, a good breaker bar & a strong right leg should have got it off :D |

Title: Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Post by mr._floppy on Jul 19th, 2006, 9:35am After a troll through the interweb thingy, I found special bolt grip sockets designed to remove rounded bolts . Or I could just hacksaw the last bolt head off , remove the bearing cage, and there should be enough of the bolt shank showing to remove with pliers. I wish I had thought of that yesterday when the the thing was in bits ??? It's the heat , it fries your brain. I'll give it another go when the weather gets cooler . |
