Title: Electric rear seat
Post by mazzy_j on Jul 18th, 2006, 11:32am
Hi all, i'm sure someone on here has done it before but how easy is it to fit the electric rear seat adjustable motors from the old granada into the scorpio?

A real doddle to do. I have fitted it to two scorpios now. All you need to do is make sure you have everything from the old Granada. The motors, cover trims, switch and cover and the wiring loom. Then all that is needed is to identify the wires feeding the seat motors for the front motors and use these as the source of power as they did on the Granadas

I will post some piccys later

Thanks  :) I was 99% sure it was you who had done it before, just couldn't find any old posts.

Here you go.

Remove the trim from behind the seat and then remove the fixed seat bolt and the frame it sits in. This is held in with screws at the back and the same screw holes fit the motor housing. Do not at this stage, cut the leather on the bolster.

These were taken when I did the ones on my 1998 red facelift a few years ago

Route the wiring loom in from the switch position and connect up to the motor

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF2199.jpg

The wiring then needs to be run through the wiring channels to the front seat positions. After identifying the wiring to the front seat motors, strip some insulation back off the existing wiring and solder the new wiring to it and then tape up securely.

The switch can then be mounted in the panel. This is my Scorpio one and as you can see it has the template already on the back, showing that the panels are the same. I got the ones from the Granada with the switch already in place.

Once all of the connections have been made, cut the leather of the bolster cushion as shown. This allows the bolt to travel back and forth . Only cut as shown and about 1 or 2mm bigger than the diameter of the bolt. Anymore will be seen

Fit the trim panel for that factory fitted look!!

Test the seat and it should recline like this!

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF2208.jpg

Repeat the above for the other side.

Just one thing, on one of the pictures, you can see that mine has the side airbags. If yours has the same sticker on the side of each front seat, make sure the battery is disconnected for at least 15 minutes before you start proding under the seat wiring!!

Much better  ;D These are the ones i've bought, gonna go round and pick them up on friday and hopefully have them fitted over the weekend.

Thanks for digging all that lot out Baz,

Matt,

it looks like you will need the wiring loom from the switches to the front seats and a few screw covers etc. I will see what I can find

:)

I was having a chat with Ultima_Bloke at the essex meet yesterday and he said i might have clearance problems with regards to the parcel shelf. Did you have any similar problems with yours at all?

Matt

Title: Re: Electric rear seat
Post by Baz on Jul 20th, 2006, 9:40am
No.....if you look at the parcel shelf, the bottom of it has a strip of material of about 1" in depth and it is not as deep as it looks. The seat just pushes it out of the way. Don't forget that these were the same bodyshell (with a few slight modifications) as the granada anyway! There are no clearance issues at all and he is just jealous and trying to put you off!!! ;D ;D

Hi Baz

Thanks for the pic’s, spurred me into getting on with this mod,
Got some motors on ebay last night – don’t think it includes the trim panels, but I expect I can make something up.

Just removed the fixed seat bolt to check seat goes back – no problem, except s**s law dictates the luggage protector I fitted around the boot hinges will need modifying.

Cheers, let you know how I get on.

Thanks Baz

I'll see what turns up with the motors & let you know if I need them (I asked the guy if he had them as not shown on the ebay picture).

Hi Baz,

No trim panels with motors have sent you a pm.

Fitted the motors today, worked fine hot wired. I need to make up the harness. Did you connect straight from the switches, or should it have relays?

If anyone’s doing this mod, you’ll need a longer front bolt with a smaller head for each side – I used a couple of M8x40mm allen bolts.

I'm still waiting for mine to turn up  :( the wife of the chap who was selling them e-mailed me to say he had shattered his ankle so couldn't get down to his lock-up so get them.

That's annoying, but worth the wait. :)
You'll see what I mean about the bolts, when you get the motors - just make sure you've got some before you start as the 2 on the car will be too short.

Hi Paul, hope you have a brilliant time, sounds like you will with the family crowd  :) I'm off on my jollies this sunday for 2 weeks with the girlfriend, mum and dad, brother and sister on a continental roadtrip (9 countries altogether!). Can't wait to get away from it all, and hopefully the Scorp will make it there and back ;D

Matt

Hi Matt
Just read your other post, take back what I said about worth the wait, you must be chessed off about not getting the motors.

If they do turn up before you go, wind the seats back before loading the boot, so you know there's enough room.

Have a good trip
Dave

Also planning on the conversion for the rear seats. I've already got all of the goodies just waiting now on the time to do it and and the courage to tap into the original harness. Still unsure which wires to use but haven't really looked at it to hard to be honest yet.

Still it's good to read about all your efforts and hope to learn a thing or two. Good Luck!

well,i got my motors in & all wired up,& it all works a treat.I did however go 2 steps more.... i did an LED swap into the granada window switches (for the hell of it) & as its the kids mainly in the back who fall asleep on the long runs that we often do, i thought that i would add switches in the front so i can recline the seats if they nod off ! this did mean the use of 2 relays per seat, the front & rear switches then control these relays which  then move the seats .                              The front (i used ultima window switches) are above the heated seat switches one in the T/C hole & the other in a hole i made on the other side. The result is very factory fitted & although exrta work & maybe not everybodys cup of tea it just adds to that fully loaded spec. (apart from T/C!) & the kids  have a new toy too

Thanks Dave  ;D If they do get to me on Saturday i may get a chance to fit them before i head off to Folkestone for the tube to France early Sunday morning.

He's out of hospital and says he's posted them so hopefully not too long to wait  :)

This is all very exciting!!

I looked at fitting switches in the front to control the rear seats for when the little lad is asleep but never got round to it....I just get the wife to strech back and do it. Good idea though, any chance of some piccys so I can nick the idea in the future!!

Dave, the wiring does indeed just piggy back onto the front seat wiring with no other relays other than those already installed for the fronts. Partly I guess because it is highly unlikely that all 4 seats will be used at the same time for any period of time either!!

Looks like i may be doing this whilst on holiday so i'll have to get everything i need before hand.

Got a quick couple of questions about the wiring side of things, how many wires do i need to splice into the front seat motor loom for each side and are they colour coded the same colours as the front seat wires?

Thanks, Matt

Matt,

there are only two wires +ve and -ve that are the feeds to the seats. Unfortunately they are different colours because the Scorpio wiring is not the same as the Granada wiring. Will have a look and let you know
