Title: pattern part cats
Post by cossie_al on Jul 25th, 2006, 10:16pm
Well guys and galls I have started to gather the parts to get my beloved motor back on the road.
I ordered a pair of cats from cats4less.co.uk came in at about £150.00 for both. ;D
But the actual cats them selves are much smaller than the original ones.
Just wondering if anyone else has had similar, and is this down to more eficient modern cats or something along them lines.

I replaced both my cats with aftermarket ones and on both had to also supply bolts as they didn't have the studs already attached to them unlike the OE ones for the flange to connect to the manifold. Other than that they fitted OK!

Well saying that I didn't personally do the job and the garage ended spending twice as long as expected trying to undo the original ones. Ended up costing me £160 just for fittment alone  :o  >:(

I need to replace one of my cats to get through the MOT. Checking with local motor factors, thre are a couple available around the £76 to £80 (+ VAT) mark.

I also see that www.catman.co.uk is recommended. Has anyone used a catman supplied cat? Are the fittings the same as the original Ford part or will extra bolts/fixings be required? I want to try and minimise the garage labour cost by having all the bits ready.

BTW, Ford quoted me £404.27 + VAT for a single cat.  :o

Well, after removing the cats to see which was faulty (and breaking off a couple of studs on the process), we found that both cats no longer had ceramic inside them, so both needed replacement.  :(

A quick call to Catman and I received the new cats the following day, total cost £206 including delivery and VAT. Then the fun started. The driver's side cat went on fine, once we had realised that Ford had supplied the wrong bolts. (£16 a set). The passenger side however would not go on; the flange on the new pipe did not line up with the manifold. After a lot of cussing, the cause was obvious. The w*nker who built up the cat assembly had welded the wrong side of the end-plate onto the pipe. The giveaway was that the gasket recess was under the pipe weld!

Another call to Catman resulted in a correct replacement being sent out for the next day, so all was not lost. Once this was fitted, the car passed the emissions test. The whole exhaust system seems to be quieter and the idle seems smoother.

Sadly for the MOT, I also needed to replace the front wishbones. These cost £100.22 each plus VAT and also needed a bush (not included!) at £16.23 + VAT per side!

Finally new front discs, pads and flexible hoses were fitted. Total cost for parts and labour £1026!

This was the first time I'd had to spend major money for an MOT but it was worth it, the car drives beautifully.

sounds familiar to me mate had probs just like yours with my mot even considered selling the scorp due to extortionate garage labour costs ended up doing the work myself despite having an acute back dissorder. however getting a call from the mot place saying you can collect your and it passed was like having a big heap of birthdays and christmases all at once. ;D

Glad to hear your's passed Al.

Mine had been good on previous years, needing a tyre or brake pads etc. This year I knew it would be a biggie because I could feel a slight judder in the steering when driving round a long left hand bend. Also I knew at least one of the cats had 'gone' as I had a BAD noise in the exhaust a few months ago which cleared after a momentary loss of power (blocked cat?).

Its SO good to have the Scorpio back again, feeling 'tighter' and quieter than before.

BTW, labour charge was £264 plus VAT, which didn't seem too bad. It wasn't a Ford dealer of course!

sounds pretty good to me a local guy quoted over £600 to replace a set of flexi brake hoses and fit a pair of cats if I supplied them and replace one brake pipe.
Obviously he did not get the work but after I did it I did take it back for th retest
but I did put right the advisory points aswell.
When I collected it the guy said this must have cost well over a grand to put right is it worth it?
I said it has passed hasnt it and it cost me less than your quote to put everything including the advisories rifght so can I have my keys and documentation now PLEASE ;D ;D
