Title: Battery problems
Post by swiss tony on Aug 8th, 2006, 10:17pm
Hi all , my battery has just died manged to jump start it and went for a 45min drive then after leaving it for an hour it was dead again. It still has enough power to operate lights/radio etc but won't turn engine just clicks.
I recently had some electrical problems whereby the alternator was putting out too much charge and tripping out the instruments, just wondering if this could have damaged the battery.
Should i bite the bullet and buy a new battery and if so can anyone reccomend a good one for a 95 2.5 tdi
Thanks very much ;D

Turn the headlamps on and then try starting the car.  If they don't dim when you try cranking the engine then it could be a duff starter motor.  Of course, if charging the battery allows it to start then it may well need replacing, but do check how much current is being drawn with ignition, etc. turned off as it may well be an electrical fault draining the battery such as broken rectifier diodes in the alternator.

If the alternator was giving out to much charge then it is likely that the battery has been 'cooked'.

I had this once on a Mondeo & didn't realise until there was a strange smell coming through the vents. On opening the bonnet, I could hear a bubbling noise which seemed to be coming from the battery. I leant closer & it was indeed coming from the battery & when I put my hand on it, it was red hot & looked as though it was bulging slightly.
It could have been quite a dangerous situation, as the battery could have exploded, had it got any hotter :o

When the alternator was tested the next day, it was indeed chucking out way too much charge. And the battery was completely dead.

Read this about the Battery if you have to replace it. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/battery.htm. The main thing is to buy a large capacity unit as the articxle says. The second thing to check for is the size, including the height, to make sure it will fit in the tray. Scorpios use so much electrical power that a lower rated unit will not do the job and all sorts of odd electrical faults can occur.
