Title: Auto Gearbox Work
Post by DJWerkz on Aug 11th, 2006, 11:21pm
Brother-in-law (Len), came over today to remove the auto box.  He got it off without any problems and removed the old front oil seal.

When we got the old oil seal out it was clearly different from the new one provided so I ran down to the dealer quick and had them check it over.

The old oil seal was a US made part and had an outer lip around the top rim whereas the new one had no lip.

The guy I usually deal with at Ford's was his usually helpful self (very helpful) and checked out the FNIS number against the 84GT... number stamped on the old oil seal.

It seems the old US made seal was made obsolete at some point and the replacement was slightly different in physical design, but never the less, the correct part was provided.

Worth noting that the old seal was clearly split which was why I lost so much DEXRON II!

When I got back to Len and the car he then said that he had just found the very thin black seal that goes between the gearbox unit and bell housing to be broken too, so it seems as though I will be back down at Ford's on Monday morning, although the A4LDE drawings on te Scorpio 'How To' sister site don't seem to identify this part.

We checked the quality of the old oil in the gearbox and it was still very red which was a relief, but we have not yet removed the sump and old oil screen.

I have been thinking of late and will probably be putting the car up for sale once the gearbox is fully serviced and sorted.  We've probably been through the car with a fine tooth comb now and got it to the stage where it's in pretty good shape.

As much as I do love the car, being on disability benefit provides me with little income and I feel that the level of reliability and worry free driving is not enough for what I require, not to mention the down time and hassle of finding parts then waiting for Len to do all the work.

Someone will be getting a great car when we do sell it.  Have no idea of what I will replace it with, and to be honest, not really given it too much thought.

Should anyone be interested in the car just IM me (sorry, can't remember what the correct protocol is for mentioning cars will be for sale).

Craig the seal you mention is about £5.

That front seal is a upgrade as it was a common problem on the older auto's.
Ford solved the front seal blow out problem in 1995 & did more work on it in 1997.

Disability Benefit ?

Can't  you get one  of  them  cars  from  the benefits agency ?

The guy downstairs  has  just taken delivery of a spanking  new black  Ford Focus  ( he only uses it to take his wife to the local hospital ).

Benefits agency do not supply cars, neither are they 'free' which many people think they are.  You can apply for a car through the Mobility scheme, the smallest most basic cars are available without any downpayment from the person receiving disability benefit (money they have to find themselves), but anything that is a decent size you are looking at forking out a downpayment.

As I am a big bloke with chronic back problems I need a large car, plus we are a family of 5 too.  Average spec. Mondeo the last time I checked had a downpayment of £2000.  Friend of mine got a Kia Sedona through the scheme and his downpayment was £3000!!!  He has said never again.

And the disability payment you receive each week for being disabled and not being able to work goes to pay for the car.

For what I would have to pay in downpayments alone I can get a good s/h vehicle and it will be mine to keep.  I also do not have the worry of any repair costs at the end of the contract too.  I have already seen extortionate bills for repairs to bodywork and interiors for cars returned at the end of their contracts.  Imagine having to find money for these at the end of the contract then another hefty downpayment for your next vehicle all at the same time on income support!

If I did not have kids then I would not worry so much about the car being damaged in any way  but I still do not think the scheme is all it's cracked up to be.

DJ, my advice to you is to stick with the devil you know.  The Scorp is no more un reliable than any other car in the same secondhand price range, other than perhaps a Mitsubishi 24v estate, although these have one or two problems and peculiarities of their own just like the Scorp's.  Being ex motor trade, I never buy brand new cars, but go for low mile with history cars. By the very fact that all Scorps are a few years old now and have 50k plus on their clocks they will require maintenance, and their particular gremlins sorting out.  As you have said, you have spent your money and gone through this phase so why not have the benefits of all this for a year or two ?  I have a Land Rover Disco which is my primary tow car for my boat, and I bought it one owner with history, 32,000 miles.  Within the first year I had the engine out for rear main oil seal, Alternator, door lock, heater hose and head gasket because girlfriend doesnt know what temp gauge is !!!!, and an ignition lock cos the key broke in it. However I havent spent a penny on it in the last 2 years apart from servicing.  My point is once you get the cars to the way you personally want them, (in my case immaculate and dead right), then they will give you miles of trouble free motoring.  I have been through the same stuff with my 24v Estate since I bought it earlier this year, and now all is sweet and harmonious.  OK so I've done over a grand in bits, but £300 was having the bumpers and bonnet painted to get rid of stone chips (fussy I know). I wouldn't dream of selling it now though as all I'll be doing is giving this money and work to someone else to enjoy trouble free motoring for a year two !!  Anyway good luck with whatever you decide to do !

I hear you Dave but the other problem I have is deteriorating health, particularly chronic back problems.  I realy want something higher off the ground so it's not so much trouble getting in and out of the car.

I hardly do any mileage and am only looking for something cheap.  Seen some good deals on the old Ssangyong Musso GX220, although I would love my old Chevy Suburban that I ran in the USA,...hehehe
